Fat Tuesday was celebrated in the Illinois Valley with Spring Valley Bakery and Bobaluk's selling paczkis. Paczki’s are rich, deep-fried Polish doughnuts traditionally filled with fruit preserves like plum or rose hip jam, and topped with powdered sugar or glaze. The pastries date back to the 1700's when bakers in Poland would use up their sugars, jellies and other items for the treats prior to Lent.

Iconic Boutique owner Michelle Battistelli announced Sunday that the downtown Ottawa shop will close after 11 years in business.
The shop, currently at 225 Backbone Road, will move to 902 N. Main St., the former location of Sean Philip Bridals, which closed in March 2025.
Spring Valley Ford will consolidate with Schimmer Ford in Peru and Mendota Ford, following nearly 17 years of operation, Owner and President Jeff Schimmer announced.

The Treehouses at Starved Rock is a 26-acre retreat carved into Starved Rock’s border. There are two treehouses available for short stays and two more under construction, with availability beginning in February.

“It’s very exciting to have more retail invest in the city of Peru,” Mayor Ken Kolowski said when the store opened. “Our goal is to continue to create more retail and more jobs for our community.”

Crews are making significant progress on the La Salle-Peru Township High School’s new Agriculture Center on the southeast corner of Sixth and Creve Coeur streets in La Salle. The $8 million agriculture center is expected to be mostly complete by mid-May.
