MULBERRY GROVE, IL — Two Brick residents who were killed in a crash involving a semi-trailer on an interstate in Illinois near St. Louis are remembered as a longtime couple who competed in sports as recent graduates of Point Pleasant Borough High School.
Marsada Connors, 20, and Cole Young, 19, were both killed at the scene of the Friday morning crash involving three vehicles on Interstate 70 outside Mulberry Grove, Illinois, a community some 60 miles east of St. Louis.

Illinois State Police said Connors was a passenger in a 2008 Honda Odyssey driven by Young at 9:19 a.m. near the interstate’s milepost 55 in Fayette County when the car was struck by a 2020 freight liner truck tractor semi-trailer that went across the median into oncoming traffic.
The semi-trailer also struck a 2005 Chevrolet pickup pulling a trailer that had a car, but the 31-year-old driver and 29-year-old passenger from Pleasant Hope, Missouri, both refused medical attention, police said.
The semi-trailer driver, 55-year-old Bill Lard, of Los Angeles, was airlifted to an area hospital with serious injuries. An update on his condition wasn’t known on Sunday. Lard was cited for improper lane use and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, the Ashbury Park Press reported.
Young was a varsity baseball player at Point Pleasant, while Connors played basketball, according to the publication.
David Drew, who coached both recent grads, told the Park Press they were “just two of the best kids you could imagine.”

He said Young and Connors were a longtime couple, and on their way home from a cross-country trip when they were killed in Illinois.
“Everyone in the community is shaken up,” Drew said. “Our prayers are with their family.”

Princeton High School will hold homecoming activities next week.
Coronation will be held at a community pep rally and bonfire at Eddie Allen Field on October 6 at 8:30 pm.  Senior class attendants are Kyla Coffman and Kaleb Thomas, Lauren Krohn and Logan Smith, and Kinslee Stokely and Luke Kelly. Junior class attendants are Megan Spencer and Hunter Foster. Sophomore class attendants are Grace Kelly and Gavin Power. Freshman class attendants are Addy Henke and Cooper Boxley.
The homecoming parade will start at the Princeton High School on October 8 at 2:15 in the afternoon. The parade route will travel to the square and back. A pep assembly will be held in the gym after the parade.
The varsity football team will play Polo on October 8 at 7 pm and the homecoming dance will be held in the elementary school commons after the football game.

On Monday, Dec. 20, at 9 a.m., the Scott County Sheriff’s Office will hold a Swearing-In Ceremony at the Sheriff’s Office Headquarters at 3206 S. 16^th Ave., Eldridge. Aimee Sanchez and Patrick Miller have been hired as the newest deputy sheriffs for Scott County.
Sanchez is originally from Chicago, and graduated from Foreman High School. She joined the Illinois National Guard in 2013 and has been enlisted as military police for the 333^rd MP Company in Freeport, Ill. Sanchez moved to the Quad Cities in the fall of 2016, attended Western Illinois University, and graduated in spring 2018 with a double major in Spanish and a B.A. in Law Enforcement and Justice Administration.
With her unit in the National Guard, Sanchez has attended both President Trump’s (2017) and President Biden’s (2021) inauguration, has responded to civil disturbances in Chicago in 2020, and from January 2021 to May 2021, she participated in the Washington, D.C. National Guard response for the Capital attack. Sanchez began her career with Scott County as a bailiff in October 2017 and was promoted as a corrections officer in 2019. She and her daughter, Amunet, reside in Davenport.
Patrick Miller was born in raised in Bettendorf, and graduated from Pleasant Valley High School in 2005.  In 2010, he graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a B.A. in Criminology. Miller was hired by the Rock Island Police Department in 2019 and is a certified taser instructor. He enjoys spending his free time with his wife Elizabeth, his six-year-old daughter Josie and his four-year-old son Emmett.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Police surrounded a home in Clinton County, Illinois after an extensive search for the man wanted for killing an Illinois officer this morning. The suspect has been arrested.
WEHT-TV reports that Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Riley was shot and killed on the job on I-64 at around 5:00 am near Mill Shoals, Illinois Wednesday morning. The Deputy’s squad car was missing from the scene and then found abandoned on Interstate 64.
A man was shot in the shoulder and carjacked at a St. Peters QuikTrip at around 7:00 am Wednesday morning. St. Peters police say that they found evidence at the QuikTrip that connects the suspect to the death of an Illinois officer. It is not clear how the suspect got to the St. Peters area but they were investigating a semi-truck in the gas station’s parking lot.
The search for the suspect started in Missouri and then led to several locations in Illinois. People were warned to lock their doors and police released an image of another vehicle connected to the suspect.
Police surrounded a home in Carlyle, Illinois Wednesday afternoon. They eventually arrested the suspect wanted for this crime.
The suspect is described as a white man, last seen wearing a light gray hoodie, backpack, and black shoes. His vehicle was found unoccupied in O’Fallon, Missouri. He was considered armed and dangerous.
A Facebook post from the St. Peters Police Department said a man carjacked was shot and carjacked at the QuikTrip on Main Street in St. Peters at around 7:00 am. The suspect took the victim’s Chevy Cruze this morning and then fled the area. Police said the victim is in stable condition at the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Highland-Pierron Fire Department in Illinois was warning people to lock their doors.
Police in Clinton County, Illinois were warning people who live in communities near Breese, Illinois to be on the lookout a man they considered to be armed and dangerous. They shared images of the suspect’s vehicle. They were asking people to lock their homes and not respond to strangers.
Police initially said that there were two suspects. One of the men was misidentified and was a victim.
Police surrounded a home in Clinton County, Illinois at around 1:00 pm. There was a massive police presence in the area with officers’ vehicles lining the rural roads. Police were eventually able to arrest the suspect.
FOX 2 will continue to update this story with more information as it becomes available.
Wayne County Illinois Shooting Update: Police have the suspect in custody. Police are not looking for any other suspects at this time.
Wayne County murder suspect update: One suspect is in custody and one suspect is still in a residence near Carlyle, IL. Police are on scene.

Chicago City Clerk Anna Valencia has announced her candidacy for Illinois secretary of state in the 2022 election.

Chicago City Clerk Anna Valencia is ready for bigger things. 
Valencia, 36, announced her candidacy June 7 for Illinois secretary of state. Since then, she has been on a months-long statewide tour to promote her campaign, stopping Monday at Milltown Coffee in Moline to talk about her goals for the office.
If elected, Valencia would be the first female and the first Latina to hold the office. Current Secretary of State Jesse White announced his retirement after more than 24 years in office. 
Valencia joins a crowded field of other Democratic candidates, including Chicago Aldermen Pat Dowell and David Moore and former treasurer Alexi Giannoulias — all of whom Valencia will face in the June 28, 2022, primary election. 
“What separates me from the rest of the primary (candidates) is that I am actually from downstate; I am from Metro East,” she said. “I grew up in a labor household. I know what it’s like to have parents who didn’t work for two years because of the recession.
“We need, as the Democratic Party, to put up candidates that understand those values. We need candidates that are authentic. Being a Chicago city-wide leader, I have what it takes to get out voters in Chicago and get out voters downstate. I think that definitely will separate me in the primary.
“It’s also time for an experienced woman to be secretary of state,” Valencia said. “I have a lot of great ideas that have been implemented. I’ve actually executed what I’ve talked about.”
Valencia was appointed city clerk in 2017 and won election in 2019.
“The work we do in the city clerk’s office is very similar to a lot of the work in the secretary of state’s office, too,” she said.
Valencia credits White for his accomplishments in the office and for bringing mobile services into communities. She already has a list of goals in mind for the office, including plans to modernize outdated systems. 
“There are three things I want to do as secretary of state: equity, access and modernization,” she said. “Equity has to be through every lens for every policy that we do. We need to make sure there are diverse perspectives on the table. In terms of access, the first thing on my mind is voting access.”
To expand voting access, Valencia wants to create an Illinois Voting Access Commission. She also wants to create a civics corps, a paid internship program for college-age youth.
In terms of modernization, Valencia has her sights on the DMV and its reputation for long lines and inaccessibility. Offering services on a mobile app would solve some of those problems, she said, in addition to offering pop-up DMV offices in under-served communities.
“I’ve done a lot of the same operational work that parallels to the secretary of state’s office,” she said. “We created in the city clerk’s office, the first-ever municipal ID card. It’s a government ID, a library card, a transit card and a prescription discount card in one. It’s free and we print them (on site) in the communities. Identification is so important to the community.”
The secretary of state is the the second largest constitutional office, after the governor’s office. The office houses 20 departments, employs more than 4,000 people and generates more than $2 billion in annual revenue, with more than half those funds supporting state highway construction projects. 
Responsibilities include maintaining official state records; overseeing the state’s library system; tracking 466,000 corporations; and, through the Department of Motor Vehicles, keeping track of more than 8.7 million drivers and 11 million registered vehicles, among other responsibilities. 
In addition to her experience as city clerk, she managed U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin’s 2014 re-election campaign, overseeing a $10 million budget and 32 staffers; was deputy director of the Illinois Senate Democratic Victory Fund; and worked for former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, running his legislative counsel and government affairs office.
“When I got into politics and government, I didn’t see anyone that looked like me,” she said. “Not a lot of women were in elected office back then. It really lit a fire under me to get involved and I worked on various campaigns.”
Valencia holds a bachelor’s degree in international studies from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The Granite City native has a 16-month-old daughter, Reyana, with husband, Reyahd. 
Valencia already has endorsements from U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., and several labor organizations.

Peoria, Ill. (WMBD) – A powerful winter storm brought heavy rain, light freezing rain and heavy snow to Central Illinois Thursday. The storm lead to several crashes that shut down area interstates and was the second major winter storm to hit Central Illinois in two weeks.

This forecast was by far one of the most complicated forecast we’ve had so far this winter. In the days leading up to the event there was a large discrepancy in storm track, one which would send the heaviest snow north of a Macomb to Ottawa line with the other solution much further south keeping the heaviest snow along I-72. With very little movement in the models, it seemed likely that the actual solution would be somewhere in the middle, placing the heaviest snow somewhere in our local area. The lack of model consensus and the relatively narrow nature of the heavy snow swath resulted in more uncertainty in the forecast than we would typically have 24 hours out, therefore, our projected ranges were larger than we would typically see.
On Wednesday the forecast called for a widespread 4-9 inches of snow with a narrow band of 5-10 inch totals located along a Havana to Bloomington line. Throughout the day the storm track was shifting south and beginning to line up with our projections, however there was concern that this southward trend would continue heading into Thursday morning displacing the heavier snow slightly further south than where we expected it to be. As the Wednesday evening models began to filter in, there was another noteworthy southward shift in storm track. So, we adjusted the band of heavier snow another 10-15 miles south.
In the end most areas received their expected amounts of snow. It turns out the final adjustments made Wednesday night were unnecessary as the previous forecast was just as accurate as the final call. Most areas who where expected to see 5-10 inches of snow ended up between 7 and 9 inches. The most impressive snow report came from Manito with 12 inches reported, 2 inches of which fell in 45 minutes as a heavy band of snow moved across the region.

Rock Island County board member Jeff Deppe has announced his candidacy for state Representative Illinois House District 72.
Democrat Jeff Deppe has announced his candidacy for state Representative, Illinois House District 72.
Current state Rep. Mike Halpin, D-Rock Island, is running for 36th District state Senate.
Deppe’s roots run deep in Rock Island County, and he already wears many hats in the Democratic Party: He is vice president of the Rock Island County Democratic Party and is a Rock Island County board member, representing District 9. He was appointed to the county board in 2015 and elected in 2016, currently serving as chairman of the county governance, health and administration committee.
Deppe is employed as the secretary and treasurer of Laborers Local 309 (LiUNA) and was elected Illinois vice president of the Quad-City Federation of Labor in May. He sits on the boards of directors for Arrowhead Youth and Family Services and the Bi-State Regional Commission. 
“I’m running for state Representative because I’ve lived in Rock Island County all my life, I’ve paid my taxes and I’ve worked building infrastructure,” he said. “I’ve been a labor leader, working to bring blue-collar jobs to this area.
“I feel that my time with the county board has been useful, and I’d like to take my leadership skills to the next level.”
As a county board member, Deppe helped create the first county administrator position, pushed for ethics reform and led the effort to downsize the number of members and districts from 25 to 19.
“I listen to voters, and I feel that is a very important leadership quality,” he said. “I think I can really do some good. I helped build the John Deere Road corridor; I helped build Farm & Fleet; I helped build Menards and the 7th Street (UnityPoint-Trinity Moline) Hospital; I helped build the TaxSlayer Center. I’ve seen what infrastructure can do for jobs and the economy. I think that’s vital for Rock Island County.”
If elected, Deppe said his goals are to bring affordable housing to the area, boost the economy and continue to improve infrastructure. He said numerous projects could be accomplished using some of the nearly $18 billion the state of Illinois would receive from the $1 trillion bi-partisan federal infrastructure bill passed by the Senate in August. 
“That will bring $3 billion per year to the state of Illinois just in roads and construction,” he said. “I’d like to get some of that back into the Quad Cities because it seems like a lot of it heads up to Chicago.”
Deppe will face at least one opponent in the June 28 primary. Former 36th District state Senate candidate Gregg Johnson announced his candidacy for state Representative on Sept. 8. The general election will be held Nov. 8, 2022.
Deppe is holding an event to kick off his official campaign Sept. 28 at 5 p.m. in the parking lot of the Laborers Local 309 Hall, 2835 7th Ave., Rock Island. Refreshments and light snacks will be provided.

Mt. Carmel Police Looking for Hit-and-Run Suspect Who Injured Several
Mount Carmel Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man in connection to a recent hit and run incident.
Police released an image of the man captured from the surveillance video.
Police say the suspect hit three cars before driving off in an F350 that police have determined to be a stolen car Saturday afternoon, at the intersection of 9th and Market Street.
As for the other motorists, at least three people were injured and taken to a local hospital.
Police believe the man may be in the Princeton area after a driver who was previously unaware of his crimes, dropped him off there.

HENRY COUNTY, Ill. — An 18-year-old man was airlifted to a hospital following a crash with a semi Friday, Sept. 17 in Henry County.
Illinois State Police said it happened at about 3:15 p.m. Friday on County Road 1 near N. 2980th Avenue in Phenix Township.
An 18-year-old man from Geneseo was driving a Honda Accord and crossed over in the opposite direction, hitting a 29-year-old Cambridge man in a tractor-trailer. 
The 18-year-old man suffered serious injuries. He was airlifted to an area hospital. The semi driver refused medical treatment.
Crews were on scene for roughly five hours during the investigation to clean up debris.
