Seven Chicago firefighters were injured when a “flashover” occurred at a house fire Saturday afternoon in the Roseland neighborhood, with the force throwing multiple firefighters off the home’s front porch, officials said.
Several firefighters were forcing entry into a home in the 200 block of West 112th Place when the “flashover” took place, according to Chicago Fire Department Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt.
A “flashover” typically occurs when a combustible surface in a compartment or enclosed space rapidly and simultaneously ignites, according to FEMA.
Four firefighters were blown off the porch, but weren’t seriously injured, according to the fire commissioner. All four were transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, and three were slated to be released in the hours following the blaze.
The fourth firefighter may be transferred to Loyola University Medical Center due to burns sustained in the incident, authorities said, noting the move would simply be a precaution.
Three additional firefighters were inside the residence at the time and managed to evacuate safely. They were taken to OSF Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Evergreen Park and also expected to be released Saturday evening, Nance-Holt said.
Speaking at a news conference following the fire, Nance-Holt took a moment to recognize the first responders who put their lives on the line daily.

“It’s not enough that we could ever do or say to thank them for their courageous acts every day, whether it’s a paramedic saving a life or a firefighter bringing somebody out,” she said. “That’s what we do, and that’s what we signed up to do.”
CFD’s Office of Fire Investigation has opened an investigation to determine what may have caused the fire.

MARSHALL COUNTY, KY – A deadly crash involving a semitrailer and a car blocked the eastbound lanes of Interstate 24 near the 27 mile marker in Marshall County for several hours Tuesday, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says. 
Multiple agencies responded to the crash, which KYTC says happened just east of the U.S. 62 Calvert City exit 27 interchange. Local 6 first reported the crash shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday. The cabinet announced that the crash site was cleared shortly before 7 p.m. 
Shortly after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Marshall County Coroner’s Office announced that a Hopkinsville woman was killed in the collision. 
Another crash involving a semitrailer was reported on I-24 around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. That crash happened at the 31 mile marker of I-24 west in Livingston County. The eastbound lanes were also temporarily blocked at that location for a time so crews could remove the semitrailer from the median. As of about 8 p.m., I-24 east is restricted to one lane as crews prepare to remove the vehicle. The blocked lane is expected to reopen around 9:30 p.m.

CARBONDALE, IL – The Carbondale Police Department is asking for the public’s help finding a 14-year-old boy who has been reported missing. 
Police say Kashaad D. Johnson was last seen around 6:00 p.m. Tuesday in the 400 block of East Chestnut Street in Carbondale.
Investigators say Kashaad is 5 feet, 7 inches tall and weighs 180 pounds. He has black hair, brown eyes and he was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black jeans. 
The police department says the teen is believed to spend a lot of time in the Tatum Heights area and the 700 block of South Lewis Lane in Carbondale.
Kashaad was previously reported missing in October.

Tri-County Opportunities Council
The Tri-County Opportunities Council has announced at least 12 scholarships will be awarded to income-eligible students residing within the agency’s service area.
Applicants for the scholarships must be a resident of Bureau, Carroll, La Salle, Marshall, Ogle, Putnam, Stark or Whiteside County.
Applicants must also be attending an Illinois accredited post-secondary educational institution of higher learning during the Fall of 2022.
Students must be considered full-time to qualify for the full amount of the available scholarships. Part-time students will be considered in the competition, however scholarships awarded will be prorated if they are selected as a winner.
The scholarships are worth up to $1,250 and have been made available by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Development through its Community Services Block Grant Funds.
The deadline for scholarship applications is March 25, 2022. For more information and application forms may be obtained by contacting the Tri-County Opportunities Council office at 800-323-5434 ext. 710 or online at www.tcochelps.org.

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL – A possible threat towards the Herrin school district prompted the school district to bring in extra security Thursday.
According to the Herrin High School Facebook page, a threat was posted on social media Wednesday. The school district consulted with the Herrin Police Department and determined there was no imminent danger to students and staff.
However, out of an abundance of caution, additional law enforcement will be on school property to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Herrin schools will still be in session Thursday and operate on a normal schedule.

Bureau County Sheriff Jim Reed (Scott Anderson)
The death of a 55-year-old Bureau man is being investigated as a suspicious death by the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office.
Bureau County Sheriff James Reed said in a Thursday news release at about 8:17 p.m. Jan. 20 deputies responded to 105 N. North St. in Bureau Junction for an unknown medical issue.
Tyson McCann was discovered in the home and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The case is under investigation by the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office and Bureau County Coroner, Janice Wamhoff, as a suspicious death, according to the release. The investigation is ongoing and awaiting a final autopsy and toxicology report.
Bureau Fire first responders and Princeton EMS also responded to the scene.

PRINCETON, Ill. — UPDATE (Feb. 9): The Princeton Police Department in a statement Wednesday, Feb. 9 named the officer injured in the Feb. 7 apartment fire.
Sgt. Dan Jaeger, while catching the apartment occupants who jumped from the roof of the burning building, sustained a serious injury to his leg and broke it in multiple places, according to police.
Jaeger was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.
The police department on Facebook commended Jaeger and officer Dustin Schaill for their heroic efforts in rescuing the apartment residents from the roof.
ORIGINAL (Feb. 7): Six people are in the hospital after being trapped in or rescuing people from a burning apartment building early Monday morning, Feb. 7 in Princeton, Illinois.
According to the Princeton Fire Department, crews responded at about 1:05 a.m. to an apartment building in the 600 block of East Peru Street after reports of a fire with people trapped inside.
Firefighters arrived to find flames coming out of a front door, as well as a window on the side. There was also one person waiting on the roof. 
Fire crews helped that person down to safety, and Princeton police officers helped three others escape from the roof as well.
Six people, as well as one of the officers, were sent to the hospital for treatment. Further information about their conditions is unavailable.
The blaze was eventually extinguished, but not before it caused heavy fire and smoke damage to two of the building’s four units. The other two suffered more minor damage. Nine people were displaced by the fire.
The cause of the fire unknown as of Monday.

Sex offender in public park
Kyle E. Hand, 34, of Kewanee was picked up on a warrant for being a sex offender in a public park near children in the 700 block of S. Main Street, Princeton at 1:57 p.m. on Feb. 8.
Domestic battery
Agustin Ruiz, 27, of Ohio, Il was charged with domestic battery in the 2500 block of 2500 East Street, Ohio at 4:31 p.m. on Feb. 8.
