MAKANDA, Ill. (AP) — A fire has destroyed the family home of a southern Illinois police officer who died in August after he was allegedly struck on a Mississippi River bridge by a motorist fleeing police.
Six relatives of Brian Pierce Jr., including his mother, father and sister, escaped unharmed when the Dec. 23 fire gutted the family’s home in Makanda, in Jackson County.
Pierce’s mother, Tammy Pierce, tells KMOV-TV the fire also destroyed all of her late son’s belongings.
The 24-year-old Brooklyn police officer died Aug. 4 when authorities say a suspect fleeing police struck Pierce as he was place spike strips on a bridge that links Illinois and Missouri.

Alexis Castro is Pierce’s sister. “It’s traumatic not only waking up to no house, and not being able to be together in a living room, but my brother’s gone too,” Castro told KMOV-TV. “It’s very hard.”

Gov. JB Pritzker on Tuesday signed legislation redrawing the state’s congressional district maps, saying they reflect Illinois’ diversity and preserve minority representation.
“These maps align with the landmark Voting Rights Act and will ensure all communities are equitably represented in our congressional delegation,” Pritzker said in a statement.
Because of the state’s declining population, Illinois will have only 17 congressional seats after the 2022 elections, one fewer than it currently has.
Because most of the state’s population loss occurred in southern Illinois, the new maps combine what are currently the 12th and 15th districts, held by Republican Reps. Mike Bost and Mary Miller, respectively, into a new 12th District that covers most of the southern one-third of the state.
Miller, however, has indicated she might run in the newly-drawn 15th District, which stretches from west-central Illinois eastward across the state, curling around the city of Champaign and stretching back west and south to an area just west of Collinsville.

It also creates a new 13th District stretching from the Metro East region across a narrow strip of land through Springfield and Decatur, to Champaign.
In the Chicago metropolitan area, the maps create a new largely-Latino 3rd District that currently has no incumbent while also putting Democratic Rep. Marie Newman’s residence in the same district as fellow-Democratic Rep. Jesús “Chuy” Garcia.
Newman, however, has indicated she intends to run in the new 6th District where she would face Democratic Rep. Sean Casten in a primary.
Elsewhere, the new maps link Rockford, the Quad Cities, Galesburg, Macomb and Bloomington into one large C-shaped district.
Analysts at the Princeton Gerrymandering Project gave the new maps an overall grade of F in the categories of partisan fairness, competitiveness and compactness. They estimate the maps create 14 likely Democratic districts and three likely Republican districts.

The Illinois delegation is currently split between 13 Democrats and five Republicans.
The political reform advocacy group CHANGE Illinois, which has advocated for an independent redistricting commission, also harshly criticized the new maps, saying it was designed to produce “predetermined winners and losers in nearly all 17 districts.”
“The map is undemocratic and leaves all voters without choices, undermining the very elections that are supposed to allow voters to hold officials accountable,” the organization said in a statement.
Pritzker, however, said the maps align with the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965, which prohibits practices and procedures that discriminate on the basis of race, color or membership in a recognized language minority.
He said they also align with the Illinois Voting Rights Act, which requires redistricting plans to preserve clusters of minority voting groups that are large enough and cohesive enough to exert collective electoral power.
Pritzker’s signing of the congressional maps comes less than two weeks before a three-judge federal court panel will hear oral arguments in three separate lawsuits challenging the new legislative maps that Democrats pushed through in August and Pritzker signed into law in September.

Plaintiffs in those suits include Republican leaders in the General Assembly; a group of Latino voters in the Chicago area represented by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, or MALDEF; and a group of civil rights organizations that include the East St. Louis Branch of the NAACP, the Illinois State Conference of the NAACP and the United Congress of Community and Religious Organizations, or UCCRO.
Those plaintiffs allege the new legislative maps reduce minority representation by breaking up Latino communities in the Chicago area and Black communities in the Metro East region.
Arguments in those cases are scheduled to begin Tuesday, Dec. 7.

SIU student dies in northern Illinois shooting | News  WPSD Local 6

CARBONDALE, IL — Police in Carbondale are conducting a death investigation after officers found a person’s body inside a home on East College Street. 
The Carbondale Police Department says offices went to a home in the 1100 block of East College Street around 7:51 p.m. Tuesday to carry out a welfare check regarding a possible missing person. 
When officers check the home, they found the person’s body inside. 
Police say the cause of death has not yet been determined, and the individual’s name is not being released until their family can be notified. 
The police department says it is actively investigating the death, and anyone with information related to the investigation can call the Carbondale Police Department at 618-457-3200 or Crime Stoppers at 618-549-COPS.

CARBONDALE, IL — Two men are in jail facing gun charges, a third faces an obstruction charge and a fourth is wanted by police in connection to a shots-fired incident that happened last week in Carbondale, Illinois. 
Police responded to a report of shots fired around 7:55 p.m. Thursday in the 700 block of South Lewis Lane.
Carbondale police say the people involved were acquainted with each other. Police say three Carbondale men — 23-year-old Daivon K. Willis, 45-year-old Everett Y. Galloway and 50-year-old Eddie Payne — each pulled out handguns.

Police say Payne fired his gun, and then Willis fired his. Payne gave his gun to 28-year-old Jalen Cobb, police claim, and Cobb allegedly hid the weapon before police arrived. 
In Monday afternoon news release, police say Payne, Galloway and Cobb have been arrested. Police are searching for Willis, and ask anyone with information about his location to call the Carbondale Police Department. Willis is considered to be armed and dangerous, the police department warns. Police did not provide a photo of Willis or Cobb. 
Payne was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm. Galloway was charged with unlawful use of a weapon and not having his firearm owner’s identification card. Cobb was charged with obstructing justice. Payne and Galloway were jailed in the Jackson County Jail. After his arrest, Cobb was released with a notice to appear.

PRINCETON, Illinois — We are getting a closer look at the impact the coronavirus pandemic is having on victims of domestic violence. 
Prior to the pandemic, 1-in-3 women and 1-in-4 men said they experienced some sort of physical violence from an intimate partner. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence says on average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner.
Now, numbers have increased during the pandemic. 
“This year with all of our services; shelter, counseling, we’ve seen about a 40 – 42% uptick in services.” said Amber Killian, Domestic Violence Program Manager with Freedom House Illinois.
Killian says victims don’t fall under one type of person. 
“It’s across the spectrum. It’s men, it’s women, it’s gender non-conforming, it’s nonbinary. It’s every gender under that umbrella,” she said.
In Illinois more than 41% of women and nearly 26% of men say they have been victims of domestic violence. That’s higher than the national average. 
“If there is not intervention, it escalates over time.” said Vickie Smith, President of the Illinois Coalition against Domestic Violence.  
Those escalations can, in some cases, lead to death. Illinois saw 78 deaths from domestic violence from July 2020 to June 2021. 
One of those deaths happened in Rock Island County according to the ICADV. But domestic violence deaths are not unique to Illinois. A FOIA request to Davenport Police uncovered this year two domestic violence calls resulted in deaths.
Locally, we are seeing an increased number of calls to 911 for domestic violence as well. Local police say it is important to note, just because a call comes in and is categorized as domestic violence does not mean it is, in fact, domestic violence.

“This is preventable homicide,” said Smith. 
She says a new committee is being formed right now in Illinois after being passed by Illinois Legislators, that will begin taking a closer look at past domestic violence cases and find intervention points. These are points along the way that someone could have intervened. The goal is to find ways to get people to intervene sooner. 
“We will begin to look at these cases much more closely at a more community level so that we don’t have to rely just on law enforcement reports, and just on newsprints.” said Smith.
That committee will begin working as soon a January 2022.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — One person is under arrest after a shooting that killed two men at a busy restaurant in Kentucky on Thursday evening, police said Friday.
According to the Louisville Metro Police Department, 21-year-old Karson Reitz was arrested and charged with murder in the shooting at the Roosters restaurant location on Preston Highway. Statements from the scene indicate the restaurant was well-attended when the shooting unfolded, police department spokesperson Alicia Smiley said.
According to Smiley, an arrest citation says that security footage inside the restaurant shows Reitz shooting the two people, and that he admitted to the shooting in a statement to a detective. Smiley said no one else was injured.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the two killed in the shooting as 48-year-old Michael Miller from Louisville, who died at the scene, and 51-year-old Bradley Cross from Shepherdsville, who died at the hospital.
The investigation is ongoing. Police have not yet said what they believe the motive was.
The restaurant posted on Facebook that it would remain closed Friday and reopen Sunday.
