Joliet Township, Illinois, police said a mass shooting there happened near a DJ booth at a house party.
(CNN) — Two people were killed and at least another dozen were injured as shots rang out at a house party in Illinois where people were gathering for Halloween.
It was one of at least 11 mass shootings in the US over the holiday weekend, including several at places where crowds had assembled.
The violence left at least 12 people dead and another 52 injured, according to CNN reporting and an analysis of data from Gun Violence Archive and local news and police reports. CNN defines a mass shooting as an incident with four or more people killed or wounded by gunfire, excluding the shooter.
The number of mass shootings in the US increased during the coronavirus pandemic. There have been 599 mass shootings so far this year, according to the archive. There were 611 in 2020 and 417 in 2019, the group said.
The increase in mass shootings during the pandemic is consistent with the notion that the violence may be influenced by social and economic factors, researchers have said.
Over the weekend, gunfire erupted at house parties, a boxing event and on the streets. These are the mass shootings that took place across seven states.
Illinois: 3 weekend mass shootings
Two people were killed and at least 12 others were injured in shooting early Sunday at a Halloween party in Joliet Township, Illinois, according to the Will County Sheriff’s Office. Joliet is about 40 miles southwest of Chicago.
A sheriff’s patrol sergeant responded after hearing 10 to 12 gunshots, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. The sergeant saw more than 100 people fleeing eastwards along the street.
The shooting occurred near a DJ booth set up in the backyard of a residence, law enforcement personnel determined, the news release said. Witnesses told detectives two people fired on the crowd of nearly 200 from a porch overlooking the party, according to the news release.
The identities of the deceased will not be released until their families are notified, the sheriff’s office said.
In Decatur, Illinois, about 40 miles east of Springfield, another shooting incident at a large gathering left one person in critical condition and three others with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
Officers responded around 3:30 a.m. Saturday to reports of multiple shots fired and found a 29-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds, the Decatur Police Department said in a statement. Three other shooting victims later presented at hospitals, and it was learned they sustained their injuries in the same incident, police said.
“Officers determined that a large house party in the 1100 block of N. Union, attended by upwards of 100 people had been taking place when multiple shots were fired by multiple shooters,” according to the release.
Very few witnesses had come forward, said police, who appealed for more information.
Meanwhile, police in Flossmoor, Illinois, south of Chicago, found four people with gunshot wounds early Sunday after responding to calls of a disturbance and gunfire, CNN affiliate WLS reported, citing officials.
Paramedics worked at the scene before all four victims were taken to hospitals, WLS said.
Police said they believed it was an isolated incident, WLS reported.
Colorado: 2 killed, 2 injured
Two people were fatally shot Sunday morning in a commercial area of Lakewood, Colorado, CNN affiliate KCNC reported.
One person died at the scene, and another succumbed to injuries at a hospital, according to police, per KCNC.
Two other people who were shot were taken to the hospital on their own, KCNC reported.
Kentucky: 2 killed, 2 injured
Two people died after being shot early Sunday morning in Louisville, Kentucky, according to a news release from police provided to CNN by affiliate WAVE.
Louisville Metro Police Department officers responded to reports of a shooting near a gas station, where preliminary investigation suggested an altercation had taken place, the agency said. Emergency services took two men believed to be in their twenties to a hospital with gunshot wounds and both died, police said.
“As the investigation continued, detectives were informed by University Hospital that two other individuals, who appear to be in their 20s and who also may be connected to this incident, had shown up by private vehicle, with gunshot wounds,” police said. The severity of their injuries was not immediately known.
Texas: 2 dead, 12 wounded in separate shootings
An 18-year-old woman was fatally shot and three others, including a 16-year-old boy, were wounded after a shooting early Sunday at a party in Houston, police said.
The Houston Police Department got “a shooting in progress” call shortly after midnight, Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir said at a news conference.
“Upon arrival, they found that this location was having a house party with a very large crowd and the crowd was dispersing when the officers arrived,” he said. Officers began searching around the house for potential victims and, after finding the 18-year-old woman deceased, extended their search into the streets around the house.
Officers found evidence of a shooting at the rear of the house as well as on the street, Bashir said. “They found one weapon in the ditch, and we’re going to try to find out if that gun was used in the commission of this crime or not,” he said.
The 16-year-old and two “young adults” were later found to have been taken to hospitals by private vehicles.
Police had one possible suspect and anticipated that there would be more witnesses “and possibly more victims because everybody left the location,” said Bashir, who encouraged anyone with information to call police.
In Texarkana, Texas, a shooting at a Halloween party left one person dead and nine others injured, the Texarkana Police Department said Sunday.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting shortly before midnight at Octavia’s Activity Center, an event venue in the 2300 block of Texas Boulevard, and “encountered a large number of people running from the building and several inside suffering from gunshot wounds,” the Texarkana Police Department said in a statement on Facebook. Texarkana is about 180 miles east of Dallas.
A suspect turned himself in to police Sunday after a warrant was issued for his arrest, the police department said in a later Facebook post. He was charged with felony aggravated assault, and more charges are expected to be filed Monday, the post said.
At the time of the shooting, a few hundred people were inside the venue, police said.
A 20-year-old man died shortly after being admitted to the hospital, while the other nine victims’ injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, police said.
California: 3 killed, 8 wounded in separate shootings
A shooting Saturday at the home of a city council member in Gilroy, California, left one person dead and three others injured, according to the Gilroy Police Department.
“When officers arrived on the scene, they encountered a large outdoor party at the residence,” the police department said in a news release. “Officers learned that an altercation occurred just prior to their arrival, and at least one suspect fired a gun.”
A male victim was pronounced dead on the scene, while two of the three surviving victims had life-threatening injuries, police said. The victims were between 17 and 19 years old, police said.
A suspect, a 19-year-old from Gilroy, has been arrested and booked in jail for homicide, police said in a news release Sunday.
The altercation happened just before 1 a.m. at the home of Gilroy City Council Member Rebeca Armendariz, according to police. CNN has reached out to Armendariz for comment.
“Because this remains an active investigation, I am unable to share more at this time but I would like to thank all of the members of the community who have reached out to express their concerns for their patience,” Armendariz told CNN affiliate KGO in a statement.
In Sacramento, California, two people were killed and five wounded at a party early Saturday morning, according to investigators.
Deputies responded to a party at a business with “hundreds of people in attendance,” the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
“They located three, adult males suffering from at least one gunshot wound. They immediately began life-saving measures on the subjects while fire personnel arrived. Two of the subjects were pronounced deceased at the scene and the third subject was transported to a local hospital in serious, but stable condition,” the sheriff’s office said.
Four more shooting victims were taken to the hospital in private vehicles before deputies arrived. They were said to be in serious but stable condition.
Florida: 1 killed, 4 injured
Police say five people were shot, including one fatally, at an outdoor boxing event Saturday night in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Some 200 people were at the event in a parking lot at the Skyway Plaza, police said in a statement posted to Facebook.
“An altercation between two groups occurred and several shots were fired,” the statement said. A 21-year-old man died of his injuries while two men and two women suffered gunshot wounds.
As of Sunday, one person had been arrested, the statement continued.
Oklahoma: 4 wounded
Four people sustained non-life-threatening injuries after being shot Saturday morning in northwest Oklahoma City, CNN affiliate KOKH reported.
Police are investigating the shooting, which reportedly took place near Northwest 122nd Street and North Council Road, KOKH said.

Anita L. Roehl, age 55, of Princeton, WI, passed away surrounded by her family on Friday, December 10, 2021, after a courageous battle with leukemia at Freodtert Hospital in Milwaukee. She was born on April 9, 1966, in Ripon, WI, a daughter of Bernard and Shirley (Mann) Bornick.

Anita was a devout Christian and a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Princeton, where she was a member of the Gleaners and the altar committee. She attended St. John’s Lutheran Grade School and was a 1984 graduate of Princeton High School.
Anita married Steven Roehl on June 9, 1990, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Princeton. They were blessed with two children, Marissa and Evan. She spent most of her working years as an inspector at Alliance Laundry Systems in Ripon.
Anita enjoyed visiting wineries and trying out new restaurants, attending festivals and watching movies. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family and friends.
Those Anita leaves behind to cherish her memory include her husband of 31 years, Steven Roehl of Princeton; her two children, Marissa (Zachary) Borzick of Galesville, WI, Evan Roehl of Princeton; her father and stepmother, Bernie (Cindy) Bornick of Princeton; 3 siblings, Teresa (Curt) Manthei of Princeton, Mark (Terri) Bornick of Princeton, Shiela (Manny) Diaz of Longwood, FL; mother-in-law, Bertha Roehl of Ripon; sister-in-law, Brenda Roehl of Omro; 3 stesisters, Deborah (Joel) Alaimo of Germany, Lisa (Kyle) Barry of Springfield, IL, Pamela (Matt) Dupuis of Waunakee, WI; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Shirley Bornick.
A visitation for family and friends of Anita L. Roehl will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Friday, December 17, 2021, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 226 S. Clinton St., in Princeton. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 18, at 11:00 A.M., with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Pastor John Stelter will officiate. Anita will be laid to rest following the service in the Memory Hill Cemetery in Princeton. Allen Ninness, director of Saline County Emergency Management Agency, said donors need to be smart when trying to help tornado victims.
Like the people of Harrisburg who weathered the Feb. 29, 2012 tornado, those affected by Friday’s tornadoes in Kentucky and elsewhere will need many things, as well as volunteer help, for many weeks and months to come.
“Cash is the most useful thing,” Ninness said. “Organizations can turn it into anything they need.”
Sometimes, it’s possible to have too much of a good thing. An example of this is when the Mayfield-Graves County Fairgrounds had to announced 1 a.m. Monday that they were no longer accepting clothing donations for tornado victims.
“… If you or someone you know in our area needs clothing, please visit Pryorsburg Independent Methodist Church. They graciously took and are sorting clothes so we could make room for other essentials,” their post read.
Clothing brings a problem with it. Donated clothing needs resource personnel to sort and size it, according to Ninness.
He also suggests donating money to larger organizations that always help in natural disasters, such as the Red Cross, the Salvation Army and organizations such as Baptist Disaster Relief. Those organizations have proven they will use the funds to help disaster victims.
Ninness said they received so many donations after the Harrisburg tornado that they could not use all of the items. Those unused items were sent to Indiana to help storm victims there.
“We were thankful for the things we got,” he said.
Ninness said this most recent storm system hit a large area. “In this case, not just one town was hit. There was damage on Princeton and Dawson Springs. I’m sure small communities will have needs,” he said.
Karen Mullins, of the Marion Chamber of Commerce, was sharing requests from a group of Marion businesses accepting donations at HireLevel, 3911 W. Ernestine Lane; Country Financial office of Natasha and Tony Stearns, 2720 W. Main St. Suite A; any First Southern Bank location in Marion; and Black Diamond Harley-Davidson, 2405 Black Diamond Drive.
“Money is still going to be the big thing,” Mullins said.
Next, she suggested flashlights, batteries and lanterns; matches and candles; warm clothing, shoes and socks for children and adults.
Niness said the people in Mayfield and other damaged communities will ask for specific items as they are needed.
He added that they will need volunteers, not just now, but for weeks and months.
He also said volunteerism and even some donations can be spread out. He said people can do things at home to raise money now, then volunteer in a week or two by plugging into a group.
“It is better to show up with a group of 15 or 20 and already have a job to help out,” Ninness said.
He said recovery in Harrisburg took a good two years. Recovery from this storm will take a long time.
Sherri McKinney, regional director of communications for the American Red Cross – Tennessee Region, said many people can help out by donating blood.
An American Red Cross Emergency Blood Drive is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Sedalia Elementary School, 5252 State Route 97, in Mayfield. Anyone who lives in the area or is volunteering can donate.

“The Illinois BQA program is a proven education system that teaches sensible management practices that help improve the quality and safety of beef,” said Travis Meteer, University of Illinois Extension beef specialist and state BQA coordinator. “It clearly demonstrates how a producer’s actions on the farm have a huge impact on the final beef product.”
The BQA program aims to build consumer confidence through proper management education and guidelines for the beef industry. Producers must renew their certification every three years. Those interested can attend in-person trainings or renew anytime via an online training session at www.bqa.org.
BQA trainings are free to IBA members and $20 for non-members, which includes the cost of a meal and training materials. Pre-registration is required. Attendees should RSVP to IBA at 217-787-4280 or online at www.illinoisbeef.com.
These are the only scheduled in-person trainings for this winter and spring. If you need to renew, attend one of these trainings or complete the online certification.

CHICAGO — A vigil was held Friday evening for Woom Sing Tse, a 71-year-old man who was shot to death in Chinatown Tuesday afternoon.
Surveillance video captured the killing near the intersection of 23rd Place and Princeton Avenue, showing the suspect shooting from a car before getting out and continuing to fire at Tse.
The suspect, Alphonso Joyner, was arrested later Tuesday on the Kennedy Expressway. The motive for the shooting remains unclear.
Tse was a grandfather who immigrated from China 50 years ago to create a better life for his family.
“He’s a hardworking man. Did nothing wrong, I don’t think he even had a speeding or parking ticket. Did everything right by the book,” Tse’s son William Tse said.
A GoFundMe was started for Tse that has already raised over $70,000.

PRINCETON, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Five people were injured in an 8-vehicle crash on US-41 in Gibson County just before 4 p.m. on Thursday. No fatalities were reported.
The incident happened just north of the Toyota Manufacturing Plant.
Officials say that two people were extricated from a truck and that five people were taken to a hospital including the driver of the semi-truck.
Princeton Fire Department chief Nick Medler says the number of cars, along with the timing of the wreck added some challenges to their efforts, saying that while it may not have made their jobs more difficult, they needed to be more “strategic” in how they approached the scene.
Truck drivers like John Culver say the intersection where the wreck happened is a known problem area for drivers. Culver says black rubber marks on the pavement in both directions are a sign that the lights need to be a little longer to help drivers go northbound and southbound through the intersection.

LOWELL, IN – Jacob Douglas Jensen, 11, of Lowell, passed away Thursday, January 6, 2022 due to complications from a brain tumor. He is survived by his parents, Greg and Brittany; siblings: Jillian and Jack; grandparents: Doug and Therese Williams of Lowell, Ellen Morris of Sheffield, IL, and Larry Jensen of Princeton, IL; great-grandparents: Bill and Sandy Klene of Crown Point, IN, and Fran Anderson of Princeton IL; uncles: Chris (LeeAnn) Williams, Eric (Delphine) Rousseau-Williams, Michael (Kelly) Morris, and Jonathan Morris; cousins: Gabe, Luke, Natalie, Chelsea, Alana, Kai, Mazie, and Max; and many other great aunts, uncles and extended cousins. Jacob was born March 16, 2010, and was a light that burned brightly and was extinguished much too soon. He made everyone around him a better person. His absence leaves a gaping hole in our hearts which will never be completely filled.

MARION, IL — A Herrin, Illinois, man is wanted for questioning in connection to a shooting that happened Saturday in Marion, Illinois. 
The Marion Police Department says officers responded to a call reporting shots had been fired in the 800 block of Jodi Lane Saturday.  
The police department says responding officers learned that the 29-year-old male victim had been shot in the leg/groin area, and witnesses took the man to Heartland Regional Medical Center. He was later flown to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. 
The shooter also left the scene before officers arrived, fleeing in a dark, four-door vehicle investigators later found in Herrin. 
In a Monday news release about the shooting, the Marion Police Department says 23-year-old Braden D. Whitecotton of Herrin, Illinois, is a person of interest in the case. Police say Whitecotton is a white man with brown hair and green eyes. Police say he is 6-feet tall. 
Investigators say Whitecotton’s last known location was the Little Grassy Road/Prison Road area. 
The police department warns that Whitecotton should be considered armed and dangerous, and members of the public are advised not to approach him. 
Investigators ask anyone with information about where Whitecotton is to call the Marion Police Department at 618-993-2124.
