STORY UPDATE: Herrin Police Department is reporting officers located 2 firearms and shell casings at the scene. They have identified some people of interest related to the incident.
HERRIN, IL — Multiple law enforcement agencies responded after gunshots were fired at the Herrin Community Park Tuesday. 
Witnesses told WFCN News multiple shots were fired on the east side of the park a little before 7 p.m. Tuesday. 
The news outlet in Williamson and Franklin counties reports that the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, Herrin Police Department, and Energy Police Department responded to the scene. 
No injuries were reported, but police are continuing to investigate. 
The park was closed for the rest of the evening, WFCN News reports, and all ball games were canceled.

 (CNN) — A powerful storm raced across the central US late Friday, unleashing at least 19 tornadoes in five states and causing widespread damage, according to officials.
At least two deaths in Arkansas were attributed to the wave of tornadoes.
One person was killed and several injured in Monette, Arkansas, after a tornado struck a nursing home, according to Craighead County Judge Marvin Day.
Local officials had previously said two people died, but Day said the local coroner has since determined there was only one death.
“Everyone has been taken out of the nursing home and is accounted for,” the town’s mayor Bob Blankenship said. “We have a triage center set up at the local school where people are being treated and others have been transported to local hospitals.”
Eight miles away in Leachville, one person was killed, Mississippi County Sheriff Dale Cook told CNN.
An adult female was “in a Dollar General store when the storm hit and they could not get out,” he said.
In Tennessee, several structures were damaged and an unknown number of people were trapped in Samburg, according to Union City Police Chief Karl Ullrich.
“It’s just a small community. It’s pretty well flattened,” Obion County Sheriff’s Office Dispatcher Judy Faulkner told CNN. Samburg is in the northwest portion of the state, north of Memphis.
In Illinois, an Amazon warehouse was damaged in Edwardsville, which is 24 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri.
“It’s devastating to see the amount of damage there and to know there were people inside when that happened,” Edwardsville Police Chief Michael Fillback told CNN affiliate KMOV on Saturday morning.
Fillback said police did not know how many people were in the building at the time of the collapse, nor how many people may still be trapped inside.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker said he’d reached out to the Edwardsville mayor to offer assistance.
“My prayers are with the people of Edwardsville tonight, and I’ve reached out to the mayor to provide any needed state resources. Our @ILStatePolice and @ReadyIllinois are both coordinating closely with local officials, and I will continue to monitor the situation,” the governor said in a tweet.
In Kentucky, the state police warned of likely fatalities after “severe tornado events” across multiple counties. “While no fatalities have been confirmed at this time, loss of life is expected,” the agency tweeted late Friday night.
There was significant damage reported in Mayfield, a town of approximately 10,000 people. Photos from CNN affiliate WPSD showed damage to the Graves County Courthouse and adjoining jail.
Tornadoes were reported in Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky and Illinois, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Storm Prediction Center.
Overall, more than 55 million people nationwide were at risk for severe storms Friday.
By early Saturday, at least 157,000 customers had lost power across six states, according to poweroutage.us.
“This dynamic, sprawling storm will impact more than half the country. It’s a classic clash of air masses,” said CNN meteorologist Gene Norman.
Earlier, tornado watches were issued for central and eastern Arkansas, southeastern Missouri, northwestern Mississippi, western Tennessee, western Kentucky, southern Illinois and southwestern Indiana, according to the Storm Prediction Center.
The watch was in effect until 11 p.m. CST and included Memphis, Tennessee; Little Rock, Arkansas; Paducah, Kentucky; and Evansville, Indiana.
A second tornado watch was issued Friday evening for portions of Missouri and Illinois. The watch is also in effect until 11 p.m. CST and includes St. Louis, Jefferson City and Springfield in Missouri and Springfield and Quincy in Illinois
By mid-evening Friday, five tornado watches stretched from northeastern Texas and eastern Oklahoma to central Tennessee and Kentucky. One of the newest watches includes Nashville and Louisville, Kentucky, and was in effect until 2 a.m. CST.
Meanwhile, to the north of the weather system, snow was forecast for a large part of the country from the Intermountain West to the Upper Great Lakes through Saturday. Over 10 million Americans are under some form of winter weather alerts from this system.
The Minnesota State Patrol responded to 136 crashes prior to 4 p.m. on Friday, according to a tweet by the agency. Eight of those accidents were jackknifed semi-trucks. Thirteen were injury accidents.
The Twin Cities area is currently under a snow emergency.
Light snow fell Friday morning at Denver’s International Airport, meaning the area finally recorded its first measurable snow of the season, defined as a 10th of an inch or greater.
This brings an end to the record snow drought the city had been experiencing. Since 1882, the city had never made it into December without measurable snow. The previous record for latest measurable snow was November 21, 1934.
The city also went 232 consecutive days without measurable snow, the second-longest streak in recorded history. The record is 235 days: from March 5 to October 25, 1887.
The snow is expected to be light in Denver, with the forecast calling for around 1 inch of accumulation today, with higher tallies in the mountains to the West.

Basel, January 10, 2022 – Novartis and Molecular Partners today announced that Part A of the EMPATHY clinical trial that compared single intravenous doses of ensovibep, a DARPin antiviral therapeutic candidate vs. placebo to treat COVID-19, met the primary endpoint of viral load reduction over eight days. The two secondary endpoints also showed clinically meaningful benefit over placebo – (1) composite endpoint of hospitalization and/or Emergency Room (ER) visits or death, and (2) time to sustained clinical recovery. Novartis confirms it will now exercise its option to in-license ensovibep from Molecular Partners and, following exercise of the option, will seek expedited access globally, first via the FDA’s EUA process.

UPDATE: The crash on I-24 eastbound between the Metropolis Exit and the Ohio River Bridge has been cleared.
Due to the backed up traffic, it could take an hour or more for eastbound traffic to return to normal flow.
Illinois State Police report a crash is blocking Interstate 24 eastbound lanes from Illinois into Kentucky between Metropolis and Paducah.
The crash occurred between the Metropolis Exit and the Ohio River Bridge.
Two semi trucks were involved. According to the KYTC, one semi is in the median and the other one is reported off on the bridge approach embankment.
At this time, there is no reported impact to westbound traffic.
The City of Brookport has police and fire units monitoring traffic at the Illinois end of the bridge. KYTC personnel are expected to be on seen to assist.

This rare December setup of unseasonably warm air, high humidity, strong wind shear, and an incoming powerful cold front will provide the ingredients for perhaps two rounds of severe storms Friday night. 
Storms are expected to develop late this evening, likely first in SEMO and S. IL, expanding east into the overnight. 
This is a similar weather setup to what we had this past Sunday night/Monday morning, except this event actually features a stronger wind field. This has us concerned that one or two storms could produce a strong, longer-track tornado. Our tornado threat looks to be the highest from about 8pm – 1am.
It will be important for you to have multiple ways to receive and hear warnings as you try to sleep Friday night. Be sure to download the most recent version of the WPSD Radar app, and have your NOAA weather radio on and ready. Know your plan of action if severe weather threatens.

WHEATON, Ill. (AP) — Inmates at a suburban Chicago jail are getting a chance to study horticulture and earn college credits at the same time.
DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick’s office said that since the program was launched a few days ago, eight non-violent inmates have enrolled in what’s called the Sustainable Urban Vegetable and Herb production course.
Inmates who complete the eight-week course will earn three credit hours.
The program is offered in the DuPage County Correctional Facility’s Hope’s Garden through College of DuPage. All the produce that is cultivated by the inmates will be donated to area food pantries.
Mendrick said in a news release that the program will allow the students to learn a “life skill,” as well as give them college credits “that they can build upon when they are released.”
Brian Clement, who teaches horticulture at College of DuPage, said the program allows the school to reach more people in the community and provide needy people with food.

CALDWELL COUNTY, KY—Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife conservation officers and biologists received reports Saturday afternoon about bear sightings in Princeton, Kentucky.
The department said these sightings follow other recent reports in the region.
On Monday, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife biologists confirmed bear tracks in southern Henderson County. On Wednesday, a bear was observed near Dixon, Kentucky in Webster County. Biologists believe this is likely the same bear.
The department says there are bear populations in both eastern Kentucky and  in the Ozarks region of Missouri.
The department explained why the bear may be wandering:
“It is not unusual in the early summer for young male bears to wander well outside of the established bear range in eastern Kentucky. These bears get pushed out of the area by older, dominant males, and may wander up to several weeks or more into unfamiliar territory in search of good habitat and prospective mates before they return to the mountains where they were raised. Bears can travel 20 miles or more in a day if undisturbed. Black bears have a natural fear of people and adverse encounters with people are extremely rare.” 
Conservation officers and biologists advise the public to never approach or feed a bear.  If you do encounter a bear, keep a safe distance and never approach the bear. If you feel a bear is posing an immediate danger, they ask you call local law enforcement.
Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife says residents of an area where a bear has been spotted should secure their garbage in a garage or other building, not leave pet food or bird feed outside and clean and store barbecue grills.

About 2:55 a.m., state troopers responded to a crash on I-57 in the southbound lanes near 127th Street.
A man was killed, and another person was seriously injured, in a crash on Interstate 57 near Calumet Park on the Far South Side, according to preliminary information from Illinois State police.

One person from the crash was taken to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead, police said.
The person was identified as Terry Jackson, 35, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.
A second person was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.
The southbound lanes of I-57 near 127th Street are closed for an investigation.

SPRINGFIELD, IL– The Southern Illinois University (SIU) System is taking steps to establish itself as an anti-racist university system.
During a virtual conversation Wednesday, system president Dan Mahoney shared his objectives for the university system.
“It’s not enough to just be opposed to racism,” Mahoney said. “We need to announce publicly, which we are doing today, that as a university system, we are anti-racist and we are actively working towards developing and maintaining policies, behaviors, and systems that enhance racial equity and promote positive and sustainable change for faculty, staff and students on our SIU campuses.” 
The SIU School of Medicine and SIU School of Law have already declared themselves to be “anti-racist”. Additionally, in 2020 the SIU Board of Trustees approved a statement reflecting their commitment to anti-racist, diversity, equity and inclusion (ADEI) efforts.
According to the SIU System, over the past year, the system has established an anti-racist task force focused on policies and procedures, training, and metrics that strive to make SIU schools diverse, equitable, and inclusive.
Dr Sheila Caldwell was hired as the system-wide vice president of ADEI and Chief Diversity Officer for the SIU System. Caldwell said she looks forward to the implementation of mandatory anti-racism and bias trainings for employees beginning fall 2022.
“More initiatives will be announced in the upcoming weeks to build on our commitment to this anti-racism journey knowing that we have not yet arrived there.  We are working together to ensure people of the global majority can thrive in every corner of the SIU System and we are committed to reducing the injustices and harm that have been created by racist ideas and policies,” Caldwell said.
The university system also plans to continue their virtual “Conversations of Understanding” throughout the year. The series offers students, faculty, staff and the SIU community an opportunity to share their experiences on themes related to diversity, inclusion and equity.
Mahoney acknowledged there is still lot’s to be done to meet the schools ADEI goals, and declared the efforts “a journey towards becoming an anti-racist system.”
