CHICAGO, Ill. (WTVO) — Gov. JB Pritzker signed Illinois’ clean energy law on Wednesday, which includes a $4,000 rebate for residents to buy an electric vehicle (EV).
Gov. JB Pritzker said his goal is to have a million EVs on the road by 2030, and the state is offering one of the highest rebates in the nation.
Pritzker clarified that the rebate will apply to all Illinois residents, after reports were initially published saying the rebates would only be good for those in the Chicagoland area.
The federal government also offers a $7,500 tax credit for purchasers of electric vehicles, excluding those manufactured by Tesla and GM. The government’s credit phases out once an automaker sells 200,000 vehicles, and so far, Tesla and GM are the only two EV producers to cross that sales line.
The Climate and Equitable Jobs Act also provides for an 80% discount for the installation of both residential and commercial EV charging stations.
The new law commits Illinois to a 100% carbon-free electric grid by 2045, aligning the state with President Joe Biden’s clean energy agenda to reach net zero carbon emissions before 2050.
Lawmakers hope the new bill will make Illinois attractive to more electric vehicle manufacturers.

CHICAGO (CBS)– Firefighters battled a fire that spread to seven houses in Fuller Park Thursday morning.
Flames and smoke were shooting out from the top of four houses and two couch houses around 4 a.m. in the 4900 block of South Princeton Avenue.

According to the Chicago Fire Department, the fire possibly started on the back porch of a vacant building. The back of the buildings have collapsed along with the two coach houses.
One woman displaced by the fire said she had to make a quick run for it.
“It was terrifying – we had to hurry up and get our things – our most important valuable things to us,” said Delores Gamez, “We had to run out – got our animals out. Luckily everyone’s okay.”
A CFD official said the recent dry weather conditions made fighting the flames especially difficult.
“We’ve had no rain – everything’s dry, and once the exposure gets going, then when we get water under it, it’s kind of hard to control,” said Dept. Dist. Chief Tom Carbonneau. “Once we get water on the exposure, we work our way from the outside in – we get it going.”
American Red Cross teams were providing assistance to the people who have been displaced.

Eight people, four adult dogs, and four puppies were displaced by the fire. One injured puppy was taken to the hospital by Chicago Animal Care and Control, according to the Fire Department.
The cause of the fire is under investigation as suspicious. Fire Department officials said a Buildings Department demolition team will be tearing down two of the damaged buildings.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A man charged with murder in a South Illinois shooting was arrested in Knoxville on Thursday by the U.S. Marshals’ Smoky Mountains Fugitive Task Force. Mantia Johnson, 34, was arrested on an outstanding murder warrant out of Madison County, Illinois.
Two people were shot and killed in Madison, Illinois on August 2. The ensuing investigation identified Johnson as one of the alleged perpetrators.
An investigation by the Major Case Squad of Southern Illinois and the U.S. Marshals East St. Louis office developed that Johnson may have fled to East Tennessee. The investigation in East Tennessee led the officers to an apartment off Lula Powell Drive in Knoxville. 
Johnson was apprehended inside the apartment around 7:30 a.m. He will remain at the Knox County Detention Facility pending extradition to Illinois.

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The Rockford Fire Department said a Saturday morning fire was “incendiary” in nature.
Firefighters arrived at a residence in the 1200 block of 5th Avenue shortly before 7 a.m. where they found a fire on the second floor. The fire was under control within 25 minutes, according to officials.
One person was home at the time the fire started, but was not injured in the blaze. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

➜ HUNTER WHITENACK, an offensive tackle from New Prairie (Ind.) who committed to the Illini on April 16, and the Cougars won a low-scoring game 9-0 against South Bend Adams (Ind.) on Friday. Whitenack had one tackle on defense, while the Cougars rushing attack gained 150 yards in the win. New Prairie (5-1) has a bye week before hosting Penn (2-4) on Oct. 8.

Six people have died, including a 12-year-old boy, and 48 others have sustained injuries in shootings so far this weekend across Chicago, police stated.
At approximately 5:28 p.m. Friday, a man of unknown age was shot and killed in the 7200 block of South Yale. The man was near the sidewalk when he heard shots and felt pain, according to authorities.
The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the armpit area and hand. He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center and subsequently pronounced dead.
Early Saturday morning at approximately 1:25 a.m. in the 8700 block of South Lafayette, a 34-year-old woman was sitting in the driver’s seat of a vehicle in a parking lot with a group of people when shots were fired, police said.

The woman was shot in the head taken to University of Chicago Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
No one was in custody as of Saturday afternoon. Area Two detectives are investigating.
A 12-year-old boy was found fatally shot in the head in the 8000 block of South Bennette at approximately 10:30 a.m., according to police.
Police placed a 36-year-old woman into custody and said the incident appears to be “domestic-related.” Area Two detectives are investigating.
At approximately 4:55 p.m. Saturday, one man was fatally shot and three others were injured in a shooting in the 900 block of East 79th Street. The man who died was 24 years old and sustained a gunshot wound to the head, according to police. He was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
A second victim, a 26-year-old man, was shot in the ankle and listed in good condition at the hospital. A 28-year-old man was shot in the leg and transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was said to be in good condition, authorities stated. A fourth victim, a 27-year-old man, was shot in the leg and also reported to be in good condition.
At least six people were shot in the 300 block of East Kensington at approximately 9:39 p.m. Saturday night.
According to Chicago police, a group of people were walking to their cars when a person inside of a vehicle fired multiple rounds, striking six different people.
A 42-year-old woman was hit twice in the arm and once in the armpit, and she was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Another victim, a 32-year-old man, was shot in the face, and was listed in critical condition at an area hospital.
Four other victims, including a 15-year-old girl, a 38-year-old man, a 22-year-old man and a 31-year-old man, also suffered injuries in the incident, and were all listed in fair condition at area hospitals.
No suspects are currently in custody, and police are continuing to investigate.
Early Sunday morning, a 42-year-old woman was standing outside in the 2700 block of West Flournoy when she heard gunshots and was hit in the left knee. She was taken to an area hospital, where her condition stabilized.
Police responding to the shooting discovered a 54-year-old man sitting in a vehicle nearby. He had been shot multiple times, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
No suspects are in custody, and police are continuing to investigate.

A Carmi, Illinois man was killed in a crash on US Route 45 on Thursday, according to the Illinois State Police.
One person is dead after a three-vehicle crash on US Route 45 just north of Cottonwood Road in Saline County, Illinois.
The Illinois State Police says 80-year-old Doyle E. Prince of Carmi, Illinois, was killed in the crash, which happened around 4:28 p.m. on Thursday.
According to ISP, the crash happened when Prince sideswiped a vehicle he was trying to pass on US Route 45. ISP says Prince’s vehicle was sent across the center line into oncoming traffic, and that the vehicle he sideswiped was sent into a guard rail on the right side of the road.
After crossing the center line, ISP says Prince hit a truck head-on. The truck’s driver was flown to the hospital with serious injuries.
ISP says that two kids and two adults were inside the vehicle that was sideswiped by Prince, but that none of them were injured as a result of the incident.
Traffic was restricted on US Route 45 until about 9:00 p.m. Thursday night as crews worked to clear the scene.
