WAYNE COUNTY, Ill. (WEHT) – A 14-year-old girl from Geff, Illinois was killed Friday after a two-vehicle crash in Wayne County, Illinois, police said. Police said the accident happened on Enterprise Road (CR 1900E) at Illinois Route 161 (CR-2), Elm River Township in Wayne County at about 1:25 p.m.
A passenger car driven by Dulani Woodland, 20, of Mattoon, Illinois, was traveling northbound on Enterprise Road. A pickup truck driven by Shelby N. Shelton, 18, of Geff, Illinois, and carrying a 16-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl was traveling westbound on the Illinois Route 161 extension (County Road 2), police said. Woodland’s vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign and proceeded north through the intersection of Enterprise Road and Illinois Route 161. Shelton’s vehicle not have a stop sign and struck the passenger side Woodland’s car.
Shelton’s vehicle went off of the roadway to the right, overturned several times and came to rest on the roof, police said. The 14-year-old passenger was pronounced dead on the scene while all other passengers in both vehicles were airlifted to a regional hospital with serious injuries, police said. The ISP Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit (TCRU) is continuing the investigation.

(NEXSTAR) – Former President Bill Clinton was hospitalized in Southern California for a non-COVID related issue, spokesman Angel Ureña said in a statement Thursday.
Clinton is dealing with an infection but is “on the mend” and “in good spirits” according to Ureña.
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – Early Wednesday morning, EPD was dispatched to the Fasttrack Plaza gas station on Heidelbach Avenue for a possible burglary in progress. Police say that the caller noticed the front glass door was busted and vape pens were scattered across the floor.
Officials say they weren’t able to find a suspect at the scene, but detectives checked camera footage to try to identify the burglar. They say the footage showed a shirtless white man throw a bottle through the glass, jump the counter and steal multiple boxes of vape pens from a cabinet. The owner valued that roughly $1300 of vape products were stolen.
HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT)- Drive down Highway 41 anywhere in the Tri-State and you may not think there’s a shortage of trucks or truck drivers, but local companies say the industry is struggling.
Mark Springer with Henderson-based trucking company D & G says there’s a shortage of trucks, drivers, and parts across the industry. While the problem isn’t new, Springer says the issue isn’t being helped by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Springer notes that the pandemic has exposed the problem and made it worse with shipments coming late and not enough drivers left to handle the load.

PRINCETON — Bureau County roads were sites of two fatal traffic accidents in as many recent days.
A Princeton man was killed in a single-vehicle rollover accident about 8 p.m. Thursday east of his hometown.
On Wednesday afternoon, about 10 miles to the southwest, a rural Tiskilwa man was killed, also in a single-vehicle rollover accident.
Vehicles in both accidents were pickup trucks, according to the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office. The area is located about 50 miles north of Peoria.
The fatal accident Thursday night happened along U.S. Route 6, about one-half mile west of County Road 2300 East.
The driver of a westbound black 2001 Dodge Ram was ejected after it rolled several times off the south side of the roadway.
His passenger was extricated and transported to OSF HealthCare Saint Clare Medical Center in Princeton, where he was pronounced dead.
The sheriff’s office identified the victim as 62-year-old David M. Drazkowski. The driver was identified as Dustin L. Wrona, 33, of Princeton.
Bureau County Coroner Janice Wamhoff said a helicopter transported the driver to a Peoria hospital, but she didn’t believe he sustained life-threatening injuries.
Wrona was accused of drunken driving, speeding, improper lane use and operating an uninsured vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.
Wamhoff identified the victim of the other fatal accident, which happened shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday on County Road 1925 East near County Road 600 North.
John Huff, 55, was driving a southbound green 2005 Chevrolet pickup when it left the east side of the roadway, according to the sheriff’s office. The area is located south of Tiskilwa.
The pickup rolled over and its cab separated from the frame and continued to roll. Huff was trapped.

Nobody else was inside the vehicle. Huff was pronounced dead at the scene.
The sheriff’s office and Wamhoff were investigating both accidents.

CHICAGO (CBS) — At least 67 people were shot over the weekend in Chicago, including a police officer who was wounded in a shooting in the South Shore neighborhood. Nine of the victims of this weekend’s gun violence have died.

Police said the officer was shot just a block away when a shooting broke out around 10:50 p.m. Friday near 72nd Place and Jeffery Boulevard. They said there was a confrontation in a building, where two people had just gotten home with a pizza.
An 18-year-old man was shot and killed. A 15-year-old boy was also shot, and is in fair condition at the University of Chicago’s’ Comer Children’s hospital.
Police said when an officer arrived on scene, she got out of her squad car, and felt pain in her leg. She realized she’d been shot, and drove herself to University of Chicago Medical Center.
“I’m taking myself to the hospital. I’m taking myself. U of C!” the officer told a dispatcher over her police radio.
Sources said she received staples and stitches, later expressing gratitude to her fellow officers.
“I just want to say thank you to everybody that responded, and I’ll be back soon,” she said over the police radio.
Police said one of the four people involved in the confrontation shot the officer, but they would not say who that was.
Police Supt. David Brown said the officer has been released from the hospital, and is recovering at home.
The wounded officer’s name hasn’t publicly been released, but police said she’s 30 years old, and has been on the job two years. She’s the 12th CPD officer shot this year, and the 46th shot at.
Six people were wounded early Sunday morning in a mass shooting in Lawndale.
The group was standing outside in the 800 block of South Albany Avenue at about 2:52 a.m. when an unidentified man in a black sport-utility vehicle opened fire on them.
All the victims were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital — a woman, 27, wounded in her pelvis was listed in critical condition; a man, 28, wounded in the left and right thigh was stabilized; a woman, 30, with a graze wound to the arm listed in good condition; a man, 38, shot twice in the ankle stabilized and a man 37, wounded in his body, police said.
Around 7:45 p.m. Friday, a 44-year-old man was near the street in the 700 block of East 92nd Place in the Burnside neighborhood, when two gunmen walked up and started shooting.
The man was shot in the abdomen, and was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The victim has been identified as Jason Clark, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
At 4:20 p.m. Saturday, a 31-year-old man was on the sidewalk in the 10200 block of South Yates Boulevard in the South Deering neighborhood, when someone in a vehicle pulled out a gun and shot him in the chest and back.
The victim was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
At 8:29 p.m. Saturday, an 18-year-old woman was sitting in a parked car in the 5400 block of South Avers Avenue in the West Elsdon neighborhood, when a gunman shot her in the torso. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead at the hospital. She was identified as Melica de la Garza.
At 10:26 p.m. Saturday, two men – ages 28 and 31 – were outside in the 2300 block of West Warren Boulevard on the Near West Side when a vehicle went by and someone inside shot them both. The older man was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County where he was pronounced dead after being shot in the chest and arm, while the younger man was shot once in the right heel and was taken to the same hospital in good condition.
A few minutes later, a Chicago Fire Department paramedic was treating someone inside the emergency room at Stroger, 1900 W. Ogden Ave., when bullets came flying through the windows of those entrance doors.
The shooter was in an older green Buick that went by at 10:32 p.m. Saturday, according to police. The bullet struck the bill of the paramedic’s baseball cap.
Following the shooting, the entire area was blocked off with Chicago Police cars. Police taped off the entrance, and a number of officers were seen patrolling inside and outside the emergency and trauma areas.
It was not clear whether the gunfire at the hospital was related to the Warren Boulevard shooting less than a mile away.
At 12:11 p.m. Sunday, a woman was shot and killed while traveling in a vehicle in the North Austin neighborhood.
The 52-year-old woman was headed north in the 1200 block of North Long Avenue when she was shot in the back, police said. She was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where she was pronounced dead.
At 9:05 p.m. Sunday, a 36-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk in the 0-100 block of East 71st Street in Park Manor, when someone shot him in the back and body.
The victim was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
At 12:45 a.m. Monday, two men got into an argument during a card game inside a home in the 700 block of West 77th Place in the Gresham neighborhood, when a 38-year-old man pulled out a gun and shot a 35-year-old man several times.
The victim was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The shooter also suffered a gunshot wound to the left arm, and was in good condition at University of Chicago Medical Center.
At 1:40 a.m. Monday, one man was killed and three others were injured in a shooting in Humboldt Park.
Police said the victims were standing on the sidewalk in the 800 block of North Ridgeway Avenue, when someone in a passing car started shooting.
A 34-year-old man was shot in the chest, and was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital. Three other victims were in good condition at Stroger: a 17-year-old boy who was shot in the leg, a 24-year-old man who was shot in the right leg, and a 39-year-old man who was shot in the right leg.
Meantime, Friday night, a 37-year-old man was shot during an argument on a CTA bus in the Irving Park neighborhood.
Police said two men got into an argument on a CTA bus in the 3700 block of North Kimball Avenue around 7:50 p.m., when one of them pulled out a gun and shot the other.
A 37-year-old man was shot in the hip and was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in good condition.
At 3:44 a.m. Sunday, a 39-year-old woman was at home asleep in bed in the 7800 block of South Phillips Avenue in South Shore when she was shot by a man who fled out of the back of her apartment. The woman was shot in the chest, abdomen, and right thigh and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition.
On Sunday morning, a shooting left a 17-year-old boy wounded in broad daylight on the Dan Ryan Expressway. At 9:20 a.m., shots were fired from one car toward another in the southbound local lanes of the Dan Ryan near 43rd Street, state police said.
The car that was fired upon was damaged, but the driver and front-seat passenger – a 38-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman from Chicago, respectively – were not injured. However, a 17-year-old boy in the back seat was shot and was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, state police said.
It was not clear who the man was or how he got into the apartment.

Insight: 24-year-old Owen has seven world championships under her belt going into the Tokyo Olympics. In high school, she was sidelined from her first passion, basketball, with an ACL injury. While recovering from surgery, Owen turned to cycling and found a new love. When Owen is not racing, she enjoys her cats and listening to Michael Jackson from her pink couch, according to her website.
Achievements: Owen was the first American woman to receive the individual gold medals at the 2015 UCI Juniors Road World Championships in the under 18 category. She and the USA Cycling Team won the team pursuit at the World Championship in March 2016, becoming the first in USA Cycling history. In Rio, her team earned silver medals, as well. Owen also won gold medals at the 2017 UCI Track World Championships. In 2018, she set a world record time in the qualifying round of the 3000 individual pursuit, then broke her own record that same evening.

Insights: Capobianco started diving in 2011. As a seventh grader, he broke a 22-year-old Nassau County high school diving record. He trains four hours a day, six days a week, but when he is not diving, Capobianco enjoys gymnastics, skiing and trampolining.   
Accomplishments: In the 2019 World Championship, Copabianco placed eighth in the synchronized 3-meter and earned bronze in a mixed team event. In 2017
at the World Championship, he placed 10th in the mixed synchronized 10-meter. He is also a 2018 World Cup team member and a five-time junior national champion

Insights: Attending her third Olympics in 2021, Kiefer is the most decorated women’s foil fencer in U.S. history, according to the Team USA website. At the age of 17, she won individual bronze at the 2011 Senior World Championships. After wining four NCAA Championships for the University of Notre Dame, she transferred to the University of Kentucky Medical School in 2017. In 2019, she married men’s foil fencer Gerek Meinhardt, who was also her teammate at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, as well as at Notre Dame. Kiefer’s siblings and father were also award-winning fencers.
Accomplishments: Kiefer has led the U.S. Women’s Foil Team to a silver medal in 2017, a gold in 2018 and a bronze in 2019. At the Senior World Championships, she won bronze and silver medals for her team, as well as a bronze individually. Kiefer earned nine gold medals for both her team and individually at the Pan American Championships from 2010 to 2019. At the Junior World Championships, she won a combination of gold, silver and bronze medals for both her team and individually over a span of five years.

Insights: Stone graduated from Princeton University in 2013. Her full name is Anne-Elizabeth Stone. Her two siblings, Robert and Gracie, also competed in fencing for Princeton. She began fencing at age 9 after her father saw a flier for a fencing club in a pizza restaurant in New York. Stone served as a volunteer assistant coach for the men’s fencing team at Princeton after graduation.
Accomplishments: In 2018, Stone earned bronze as an individual at the World Championship. She has earned four gold medals total at the World Championship. In 2011, Stone placed second in NCAA Fencing Championships, in 2012 she placed third and in 2013 she placed first.

Insights: Zagunis is the most decorated fencer in the history of the United States with multiple medals. Both her parents were Olympians. They were rowers on the 1976 U.S. team. Some of her other hobbies include cooking, running and gardening.  
Accomplishments: Zagunis is a four-time Olympian, competing in 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016. She is also a four-time medalist, earning two gold medals and two bronze. She made history in 2004 when she became the first U.S fencer to win an Olympic gold medal in 100 years when she was only 19.

Accomplishments: The two-time Olympian competed for Team USA in 2012 and 2016. In the London 2012 Olympic Games, she was a member of the first U.S. Women’s Epee Team to win a medal, bringing back bronze. Insights: Hurley earned her degree in art/pre-med when she graduated from Notre Dame in 2010. Insights: Meinhardt began fencing at the age of 9. He became the first U.S. men’s team fencer to ever qualify for the cadet, junior and senior world teams in the same year. Meinhardt graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a bachelors in information technology management and master’s in business analytics and marketing.

Some of her hobbies include practicing calligraphy, writing, reading and dancing.

Insights: Rusher majored in Human Biology at Stanford University. She was born in London, England, and now teaches sailing in Wisconsin with her sister, Kay. Kay was one of Rusher’s team members at Stanford. Her mother Cindy was a national champion in 1984 and rowed in both 1988 and 1992 Olympics and earned a silver medal in women’s four in 1992. Her father is a member of the Harvard Hall of Fame and was a three-time collegiate national champion as well as a two-time Olympic rower earning bronze in 1988 and1992.
Accomplishments: Rusher was named first team All-America by the CRCA and the Pac-12 All Academic first team. She received bronze at U23 Worlds for the US in the women’s eight and finished fourth in the varsity eight at the NCAA Championships.

Insight: Shea grew up sailing on Lake Michigan with her family and fell in love with being on the water. She joined Chicago Yacht Club’s junior sailing program and competed in high school before taking on the Laser Radial 2008 Olympic Trials her senior year. Shea graduated from Connecticut College in 2011 in Political Science where she was sailing team captain and led the group to national rankings.
Achievements: Shea competed in the Laser Radial 2008 Olympic Trials before attending college. She led her sailing team to a 2nd place finish at ICSA Women’s Nationals and a 4th place finish at Women’s Singlehanded Nationals. In 2009, she was recognized as an All-American Honorable mention and NEISA Sportswoman of the Year in 2011.

Insights: The Naperville native earned her bachelors and master’s degree from Florida State University. Apart from soccer, she also competed in track and field where she became a two-time state champion in the 800-meter and the 400-meter dash. Krueger is now a defender for the Chicago Red Stars.

This same year he was, for the second time, the Big Ten Champion in the 500-yard freestyle and 800-yard freestyle relay. He was also All-Big Ten first team. Insights: Wilimovsky began swimming when he was 9 years old because he was declined admission into summer camp when he was unable to swim a 1:50 in the 100-yard freestyle. He ended up playing water polo and surfed before focusing on swimming. Wilimovsky graduated from Northwestern in 2016 with a political science degree and aspires to continue his education at business school. 
Accomplishments: The Olympic athlete placed fifth in the 10K open water marathon. He has also raced in the same event for the World Championship. He participated in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019, most recently placing fifth for the 10K in 2019. Insights: Dolehide started playing tennis at the age of 5. She was committed to attend UCLA before deciding to play professionally. She comes from a family of tennis players. Her older sister, Courtney, won a NCAA title with her team at UCLA and coached women’s tennis at the University of Texas and is currently coaching at Georgetown for men’s and women’s tennis. Her younger sister, Stephanie, is committed to play tennis at West Point. 
Accomplishments: In 2017, Dolehide earned first Top 200 singles year-end ranking finishing at number 148 and Top 100 doubles ranking at number 99. In 2018, she had her second consecutive year ranking top 200 singles. Dolehide is currently ranked at number 44 in singles and 164 in doubles. She won two singles titles and four doubles titles on the International Tennis Federation circuit.

Insights: Berry graduated from Illinois State University in 2011 with a degree in psychology and criminal justice and is one of several mothers attending the Games this summer. When not on the track, she enjoys reading and cooking. Berry drew attention recently after her third place finish at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials when she turned her back away as the Star Spangled Banner played. She then put a shirt over her head that read “Activist Athlete.”
Accomplishments: This summer will be Berry’s second time competing in the Olympics after ranking 14th at the 2016 Rio Games in hammer throw. She was also an alternate for the 2012 London Olympics. In 2019, Berry earned a gold medal at the Pan American Games. At the USA Indoor Championships in 2013, 2014 and 2016, Berry won gold medals in all three competitions.

Insights: Card, a discus thrower, is a seven-time First-Team All-American. Card graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 2016 where she majored in human development and family studies.

Accomplishments: The Auburn graduate finished third in the U.S. Olympics Trials, making her the first ever female from Auburn to represent the United States in discus. Insights: Morris began competing at a college level at the University of North Carolina. Insights: Seidel graduated from Notre Dame in 2016. She volunteers with Girls Gotta Run, a foundation that provides scholarships to teenage girls who run, in Bekoji, Ethiopia. Seidel also speaks Spanish and enjoys playing the banjo and traveling.

Insights: The University of Tennessee graduate is the first track and field athlete in the history of Tennessee to qualify for the Olympics in the high jump. He equaled his lifetime-best with a clearance of 2.33 meters and took second place at the trials. Sullivan is also the recipient of the William Pettway, Jr. Athletic Scholarship Endowment. 
Accomplishments: Sullivan’s mark of 2.33 meters currently ranks tied for third in the world during the 2021 outdoor season. He is a four-time All-American and a 2021 Outdoor Sec silver medalist and All-Sec Second Team.

Insights: McDowell attended the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. He grew up participating in USA Triathlon’s youth and junior elite triathlon circuit as part of the Chicago-based Multisport Madness Triathlon Team. He was USA Triathlon’s Junior Athlete of the Year in 2009 and 2010. He also represented Team USA at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, where he earned silver in the individual event and bronze in the Mixed Relay.

Insights: Originally from Aurora, Colorado, Poulter led Illinois to the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship semifinals. I’ve been to the Quad Cities a few times over the years and always left town wanting more. The number of attractions and activities in this bi-state metro area seems limitless and could easily fill a week.
On a recent visit with my adult son, Jeremy, I sought out places and experiences I’d missed before. High on our checklist was a special style of pizza.
Straddling the Mississippi River, the Quad Cities consists of Rock Island, Moline and East Moline in Illinois and the Iowa cities of Davenport and Bettendorf. (Yes, that’s five municipalities, not four, but it’s a story too long to explain right here.) My recent trip included some nearby towns as well.
At Frank’s Pizzeria in Silvis we had our first taste of Quad Cities-style pizza. What makes this regional favorite so distinctive?

First of all, there’s malt in the hand-tossed crust. The toppings hide under a gooey layer of melted mozzarella, and the tomato sauce tends to be tangy, not sweet. What stands out most, though, is the crumbly sausage with fennel seed. Not the chunks of sausage I’m used to. But the tiny morsels of meat are delicious, if a bit messy. Traditionally, the pizza is cut into strips with a big scissors.
Frank’s is an old-school place, nothing fancy. It has a dated, retro look with 1950s-type kitchen chairs and a mosaic tile floor that has been there forever. The menu also lists pasta, fried chicken, stromboli, and Italian beef and sausage and meatball sandwiches. Other places serving Quad Cities-style pizza include long-time establishments like Harris, Clint’s and Gunchie’s.
One way to top off your meal in the Quad Cities is making a stop at Whitey’s Ice Cream, a local institution that got its start in Moline in 1933. Eight locations (four in Iowa, four in Illinois) serve sundaes, thick malts and shakes, and cones brimming with premium ice cream in a wide variety of flavors, from Graham Central Station and Mississippi Mud Revel to Cotton Candy, Carrot Cake and Peanut Butter Pretzel Bark. Had I been hungrier when stopping by one of the Davenport stores, I would have tried a Boston, a malt or shake with a sundae on top.
For another made-in the-Quad-Cities experience, we took a tour of Isabel Bloom Studio in Davenport for a peek at the artistic process that goes into the creation of cast-concrete sculptures. Handcrafted by skilled artisans, Isabel Bloom’s sentimental and whimsical pieces portray subjects ranging from angels and gnomes to children and animals.
A Davenport native, Bloom (1908-2001) studied under the famous regionalist artist Grant Wood at the Stone City (Iowa) Art Colony in the 1930s. She then took ceramics classes and bought a kiln for the studio she created in the basement of her Davenport home, starting out sculpting with clay before switching to concrete.
As her business grew, Bloom rented a house for her studio and hired assistants. Although she sold the company in 1981 at the age of 73, she continued to design new sculptures for the next 10 years. Today her protégé, Donna Young, who joined the firm in 1981, is the sole designer. Every year Young does 25 to 35 new designs. Some of Bloom’s original designs, such as an owl, a daisy and mourning dove, are still part of the product line.
Free tours of the studio, now housed in an old industrial building, include a short video and a walk through the studio as each step in production is explained, from mold-making to painting. Tour members come right up to the painters at work.
The studio’s shop offers the whole range of Bloom sculptures for both indoor and outdoor placement. Popular items include crosses, angels, owls, butterflies and cats. Some pieces are for special occasions (sympathy, weddings), and some are seasonal, such as snowmen and Christmas ornaments.

Moline claims the world headquarters of a really big manufacturer — Deere and Company. The free-admission John Deere Pavilion, a glass-sided building in downtown Moline, displays the brand’s agricultural, construction and forestry equipment along with vintage tractors and other machines. Visitors can climb into the cabs of vehicles, test their skills in state-of-the-art dozer and excavator simulators, and enjoy other hands-on features. (Currently undergoing an interior renovation, the pavilion plans to reopen later this year.) The adjacent store sells toys, gadgets, logo wear and other branded items in Deere’s signature colors of green and yellow.
Also in downtown Moline, you can borrow bikes (for free) at the Visit Quad Cities tourism office for cruising along the riverfront bike paths. We pedaled through the woods on Sylvan Island and saw ruins of a steel plant and quarry, then went the other direction, enjoying some nicely landscaped park land.

Another fun way of exploring the Quad Cities is the Channel Cat, an open-air water taxi that calls at four landings on both sides of the Mississippi. (Curiously, the Quad Cities section of the river flows east to west, not north to south.) The three Channel Cat ferryboats make a continuous loop in an hour or so, and your ticket ($8 adults, $4 children) is good all day. The service, available from Memorial Day through September, is stroller- and bike-friendly. We boarded the boat in downtown Moline and hopped off at the Village of East Davenport, a shopping district on the Iowa side.
A Quad Cities highlight for us was Black Hawk State Historic Site, a state park in Rock Island. In a stone lodge high above the Rock River, the free-admission John Hauberg Indian Museum has dioramas featuring life-size figures and displays a tomahawk and two pipes that belonged to the famous Sauk warrior Black Hawk (1767-1838), among other Indian relics.
At the other end of the building, interpretive panels and a 20-minute video chronicle the efforts of men employed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) to plant trees and build trails, bridges, stone picnic shelters and portions of the lodge during the Depression in the 1930s. Especially interesting are the recorded interviews with workers who recall their days living in barracks at the site for 18 months and the camaraderie they shared with men of different races and religions.

Roaming the park, visitors learn from information kiosks that from 1891 to 1925 the pretty waterfront setting was Black Hawk Watch Tower Amusement Park. Owned and operated by a streetcar company, it was located at the end of the line. The most popular ride was Shoot the Chutes, a toboggan ride with flat-bottomed boats that slid down a greased wooden track into the river. Invented in Rock Island in 1884, the ride was found at amusement parks around the country.
Today, entertainment options in the Quad Cities abound. From May to September at Modern Woodmen Park on downtown Davenport’s attractive Mississippi riverfront, the Quad Cities River Bandits, the High-A minor league squad of baseball’s Kansas City Royals, compete against teams like the Lansing Lugnuts, Peoria Chiefs and Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. The family-oriented park features a Ferris wheel and other amusements. (One night we enjoyed tasty ethnic fare and waterfront views on the patio at Taste of Ethiopia, a short walk from the stadium.)
Circa ’21 Dinner Playhouse presents Broadway-style musicals and other shows in a restored 1921 vaudeville-movie theater in downtown Rock Island. The 2022 playlist includes “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast,” “Clue: The Musical” (based on the classic board game) and “Disaster!,” a hilarious homage to 1970s disaster films.
Celebration River Cruises’ 750-passenger Celebration Belle, the largest non-gaming riverboat on the Upper Mississippi, offers sightseeing, lunch and dinner cruises that sail out of Moline from April through October. Themed music lunch cruises include “Classic Oldies” (1950s and ’60s), “Hits of the Decades” and “Broadway & Movie Tunes.”
Visitors also can tap into the rhythms of the river on Riverboat Twilight, a Victorian-inspired steamboat replica that offers 1½-hour sightseeing cruises from LeClaire, Iowa, a historic town north of the Quad Cities. On the narrated excursion to Princeton and back, passengers are regaled with river lore. We saw lots of North American white pelicans and spotted an eagle in a tree on the Illinois side.
Adjacent to the riverboat dock is the Buffalo Bill Museum, a repository of local history that includes a rare 1868 sternwheel steamboat. Some exhibits spotlight the career of William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody, the famous frontiersman, Army scout and showman who toured the U.S. and Europe with his Wild West show. Cody was born in LeClaire Township in 1846, and the Buffalo Bill Cody Homestead in Princeton preserves the stone farmhouse where he lived as a boy. Buffalo graze in the adjacent pasture.
We spent several hours drifting from shop to shop along Cody Road, the main street of LeClaire, a block from the river. Wares range from antiques and collectibles to kitchen gadgets and gourmet foods. Shameless Chocoholic tempts with decadent truffles, butter creams and fudge, while Kernel Cody’s Popcorn Shoppe seems to have every flavor under the sun. LeClaire Olive Oil Co. invites shoppers to sample extra virgin olive oils and balsamic vinegars from around the world.
A half block up the hill from Cody Road, fans of the History Channel’s “American Pickers” flock to Antique Archaeology, the store of the show’s Mike Wolfe. You might see some vintage advertising signs and other valuable antiques for sale or just on display, but most of the affordable items are Antique Archaeology caps, T-shirts, magnets and other logo merchandise.
For a small town, LeClaire is loaded with coffee shops, wine bars and restaurants. Drink in river views from the patios of the Bier Stube (German fare), Mississippi River Distilling Company (which offers tours with tasting) and Green Tree Brewery. Or try the best pork tenderloin sandwiches anywhere at Big Dave & Holly’s.
Following the Great River Road, a national byway, north from LeClaire, we devoted a few hours to Clinton, Iowa. The Sawmill Museum highlights Clinton’s heyday as a lumber center from 1870-1900, when logs floated down from Wisconsin’s northwoods were sawn into lumber, a commodity shipped across the country by rail. Guests can meet animatronic lumber barons, tour replica lumberjack cabins and captain a floating log raft simulator. The Curtis Mansion, the only lumber baron home that remains in Clinton, is open for tours.
On a bluff overlooking the Mississippi is Clinton’s Wide River Winery, where we enjoyed wines with snacks on a peaceful deck set high above a ravine. The owner, Dorothy O’Brien, is a lawyer, and her husband is a retired judge. As a nod to their profession, Wide River’s whites and reds bear names like White Collar Crime, Caught Red Handed, Repeat Offender, So Sue Me Sue, Double Jeopardy, Not Guilty and Sweet Justice. The wine slushies are a real treat. Wide River has tasting rooms in LeClaire and the Village of East Davenport.

OHIO – Winafred A. “Winnie” Lovgren, 90, of Ohio passed away peacefully Jan. 27, 2021 at Perry Memorial Hospital, Princeton with her daughter at her side.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 1 at the Norberg Memorial Home, Inc. & Monuments in Princeton. Social distancing, masks and Illinois guidelines and tier mitigation will be followed. A private family service will follow at 1 p.m. with Pastor Gene Vincent officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. at Elm Lawn Memorial Park, Princeton and all wishing to participate are invited.
Winafred was born March 11, 1930 in Princeton to Allan and Minnie (Hoffman) Spooner. She married Donald Lovgren on Nov. 24, 1955 at the Ohio United Methodist Church, Ohio and spent 43 years with him until his untimely passing in 1999.
Survivors include one daughter, Molly (Paul) Lovgren Watson of Princeton; two grandchildren, Melissa Bull and Evan Bull, both of Nashville, Tenn.; her dog, Toby; a sister-in-law, Jane Lovgren and brother-in-law, Ted Etheridge, both of Amboy; and nieces and nephews, Jeff (Mary) Lovgren, Mandy (Dean) Powers, Lori (Bob) Bumpus and Jill (Hank) Groth, all of Amboy, and Joey (Tracy) Lovgren of Stillman Valley.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers-in-law, Carl Robert (Bob) Lovgren and Emmanuel (Butch) Goubeaux; two sisters-in-law, Marjorie Goubeaux and Carolyn Etheridge; one niece, Tracey Etheridge; and a great-nephew, Avery Lovgren.
Winafred was a lifetime member of the Ohio United Methodist Church up until its closing. She was a current member of First Lutheran Church of Ohio. She attended Ohio Community schools and graduated with the Class of 1948. She later went on to get her teaching degree, majoring in history at Western Illinois University and then received her Master’s degree in Education from Northern Illinois University. She was a lifelong educator, teaching generations of families for 51 years. Her career began teaching first grade in 1950 at Walnut Elementary School. In 1955, she taught at Lincoln School in Ottawa, and then spent her last 46 years teaching at Northbrook in Mendota. She retired from teaching in 2002. She took great pleasure in still being addressed by her former students as “Mrs. Lovgren.” Not only did she enjoy her time as a teacher, she was also on the Ohio High School Board of Education for 30 years. She was a member of the National Education Association, LaSalle County Retired Teachers Association and was a recipient of the Junior Achievement Teacher of the Year Award. She was also a lifetime member of the Bureau County Historical Society.
In 1965, she had her own homecoming when she moved back to the house where her father was born in 1880, which is located on her 4th generation family farm near Ohio. She farmed alongside her husband and enjoyed raising her daughter in the country. She worked beside them raising cattle, hogs and chickens and remained on the farm until recently. She was a remarkable woman with great wit and humor. Not only did she look forward to spending time with her grandkids, she was also a sports enthusiast, cheering on the University of Illinois, the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bulls and Chicago Bears. She enjoyed reading, staying current with local news, gardening and attending horse races. She was a fan of WGN Radio, Western movies, Wheel of Fortune, Family Feud and Dr. Phil. Anyone who shared a meal with her would know that she always had room for dessert.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to St. Jude Research Hospital or First Lutheran Church’s “Ohio School Buddy Bags Program.”

PRINCETON – Events are continuing this fall at the Bureau County Fairgrounds in Princeton. The premier North Central Illinois haunted attraction “Nightmare” has six more nights to run this month. Doors creak open at 7 p.m. and stay open until 10 p.m. every Friday and Saturday night in October. Admission is $15 per person.
The Sauk Trail Gun Collectors show and sale will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 30-31 with doors opening at 8:30 a.m. They will return again Nov. 27 and 28.
November is also a busy month at the fairgrounds. Camper and boat storage will be on Saturday, Nov. 6. That day, the Modena Pigeon Show will also take place with free admission.
The Huge Winter Garage Sale is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 13. There will be free admission but a donation of food for the local food pantry is appreciated. Walneck’s Motorcycle Swap meet returns Sunday, Nov. 14.
The Northern Illinois Model Train Fair and Farm Toy Show will take place on Saturday, Nov. 20 from 9 to 3 p.m. This show includes large working railroad layouts, tractors and farm toys and lots of model railroad items for sale.

PRINCETON, Illinois (KWQC) – A man believed to be responsible for a shooting that took place in 2020 was arrested Monday after a 13-month search involving Princeton Police and the U.S. Marshall’s Service.
On July 1, 2020, witnesses say they saw then 18-year-old Davijon Robinson, of Kewanee, shoot 17-year-old Caleb Conrath and his mother Tasha Hilmes at their home in Hillview Trailer Park in Princeton, according to police.
Conrath died in the hospital of his injuries.
Witnesses say Robinson fled from the scene with an unidentified male in a dark colored Nissan Ultima, according to police.
Kewanee police tried pulling the car over during a chase but Robinson was able to get away.
Robinson was able to elude police until Monday, when police received numerous tips about his location in Decatur, Illinois.
The Princeton Police Department announced on Facebook Tuesday that they were able to take Robinson into custody without incident, and he currently is in the Bureau County Jail awaiting bond.
Police say there will be no more comment until Robinson’s first court appearance.
