La Salle-Peru, Oglesby Catholic schools to unify in fall – Shaw Local

It’s not happening tomorrow – it will take time – but the Catholic schools of Oglesby, La Salle and Peru will be unified.
Friday, pastors of the respective parishes met first with their teaching staffs and spelled out the plan to be executed over the next few months. Over the weekend, they told their parishioners: There soon will be one school (with three buildings) with a new name, new colors and mascot and, potentially, a new building.
“It’s becoming one school system,” said the Rev. Father Gary Blake, who heads the Peru Catholic School.
“We will be a new school in the fall,” said the Rev. Father Paul Carlson, pastor of Holy Family Parish in Oglesby. “It has moved very fast.”
So, what changes are forthcoming? The clergy said teachers will be retained. All three campuses will remain in use – for now. A feasibility study will, however, explore the future of the campuses.
Deb Myers, principal of Trinity Catholic Academy, said she’s described the process to her mildly-surprised faculty – the teachers knew something was up – as the three schools will be “unified, not merged or consolidated.”
Myers further noted the unifying approach will mean more offerings both in the classroom and in extracurricular activities.
“It’s all about sustaining the quality of Catholic education in the Illinois Valley for generations to come,” Myers said.
The process has taken about a year. In early 2024, the priests and principals huddled together for open-ended discussions on how to stay afloat financially. Later, they expanded the net to include secular authorities who agreed that Catholic schools, and school choice, benefit the community as a whole.
The problems driving this are anything but new. Demographics and societal changes that were decades in the making have increased the burden on parochial schools. Households are getting smaller. Fewer families are attending church and, by extension, fewer sending their children to Catholic school.
“The Catholic school model is broke,” said Rich Koehler, Peru Catholic principal, “that model being the church supports the school and the nuns provide the free labor.
“That’s totally, totally gone.”
All of which has sent education costs soaring. All three Catholic schools are operating at a deficit and have been for the past two years.
Meanwhile, facilities are aging and keeping the lights burning is growing more costly. It doesn’t help that school districts nationwide, public and parochial, are dealing with a shortage of educators.
Educators and clergy have seen it all coming and know it won’t get any better.
“It’s just the right time to address this,” Carlson said.
“We wanted to be proactive to get in front of this and work with parishioners, parents and teachers to present a solution to these things,” Blake said, “rather than have the diocese make changes.
“Traditionally, the diocese would look into the need, make the decision and give it to you. Here, the school districts and parishes are taking the lead and that is giving people more ownership in this.”
That is not to say the bishop’s office has been out of the loop. Local clergy have kept Louis Tylka, bishop of Peoria Diocese, abreast of the issues. He has given his OK for how to address them.
“The bishop has been supportive,” Myers said, “very supportive.”

Bureau County committee tables Cook County inmate deal to fine tune details – Shaw Local

Bureau County Sheriff Jim Reed speaks to the public Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2025, during a Bureau County Board committee meeting. He answered questions about an intergovernmental agreement to accept jail inmate transfer from Cook County to the Princeton jail. (Derek Barichello)
A Bureau County Board committee tabled consideration of an intergovernmental agreement to accept jail inmate transfers from Cook County.
The Technology, Building and Grounds Committee voted unanimously on Tuesday to reconsider the item once the terms of the intergovernmental agreement were set, including such stipulations as how much the county will receive per day for each inmate, transportation of inmates after their time is served and limits on the number of inmates the county will receive. Once the terms of the agreement were set, the proposal could be brought to the full board for a vote.
Bureau County Sheriff Jim Reed said the county is in no hurry to reach an agreement and he would prefer the County Board have all its questions answered before moving forward.
He reassured the committee and more than a dozen residents in attendance, including Princeton’s mayor, the arrangement is nowhere as dangerous or unmanageable as has been portrayed on social media.
Reed said the county can choose which inmates it receives and can specify in its agreement that inmates will be returned to Cook County after they are finished serving their time. He also said visitation is conducted through video conferences, so it is unlikely inmates will receive visitors in-person at the jail. Visitation in-person at the jail is only provided to those individuals who can’t afford the technology to conduct a video conference.
If the county were to take 10 inmates, it would yield more than $237,000 a year, Reed said. He would divert those funds to step up patrols in the many communities without full-time police forces, with the goal of adding two deputies. Reed has said the county negotiated a food service contract based on an average daily population of 25 and medical services for 27. Last year, however, the average headcount was 11. Cook County transfers would give taxpayers better value for their money, he has said.
Neighboring La Salle County has an intergovernmental agreement to accept Cook County jail inmate transfers. Jason Edgcomb, superintendent of La Salle County Jail, said intergovernmental agreements with Cook County alone bring in about $15,000 a month.
Reed said he has spoken with former La Salle County Sheriff Tom Templeton and he spoke about one of the few bad experiences the county had, in which an inmate covered himself with feces. Templeton said he was able to have Cook County pick up that inmate. Reed used that example to demonstrate if Bureau County were to have any bad experiences with inmates, they could be transferred from the jail. Reed also indicated Bureau County could terminate the agreement at any time.
County Board member Thomas Dolbrich, D-DePue, said Templeton told him it would be a good thing for Bureau County to enter into the intergovernmental agreement, because it has been a positive for La Salle County.
Six residents spoke during public comment, including Princeton Mayor Ray Mabry. The mayor said residents who have spoken to him were opposed of the idea, so that is why he would be in opposition as well. He said the Princeton City Council had an open discussion and were in agreement.
Janet Day also spoke during public comment Tuesday, saying that she had changed her mind about the agreement after hearing more information. She was at first opposed to the idea, but now she supports it and asked the public to trust Reed.
The committee suggested Bureau County could increase the fee to $70 per day for the inmates and set the cap at 10 inmates at a time. A stipulation also is expected to be added to the agreement in which Cook County would have to return inmates after they have served their time.
More than a dozen people gathered Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2025, at a Bureau County Board committee meeting to discuss an intergovernmental agreement proposal to accept jail inmates from Cook County. (Derek Barichello)

NewsTribune area 2025 girls basketball regional preview – Shaw Local

Members of the St. Bede girls basketball team react during a Class 1A state semifinal last season at CEFCU Arena in Normal. The Bruins begin their quest for a return trip to state Saturday against Gardner-South Wilmington in the Class 1A St. Bede Regional. (Scott Anderson)
Girls basketball regionals begin Saturday with the quarterfinal round.
Here’s a look at all the regionals involving teams in the NewsTribune area.
Schedule: Saturday – No. 8 La Salle-Peru (11-16) at No. 6 Metamora (15-13), 6 p.m.; Monday – No. 1 Washington (29-1) vs. L-P/Metamora winner, 6 p.m., No. 3 Morris (23-5) vs. No. 5 Bloomington (15-11), 7:30 p.m.; Feb. 20 – Title game, 7 p.m.
Worth noting: La Salle-Peru has not beaten any opponent in the regional. The Cavaliers lost 52-37 to Metamora on Dec. 16 in the Ottawa Holiday Tournament and also have lost twice to Morris in Interstate 8 Conference play. L-P has not won a regional since 1991. Washington is ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press Class 3A poll. The Panthers’ only loss is a 46-45 setback against Morton.
What’s next: Winner advances to the Ottawa Sectional to face the winner of the Richwoods Regional.
Schedule: Saturday – No. 10 Morrison (4-24) at No. 9 Erie-Prophetstown (6-18), 1 p.m., No. 11 Rock Falls (3-26) at No. 5 Oregon (13-14), TBA; Monday – No. 2 Riverdale (19-9) vs. Morrison/E-P winner, 6 p.m., No. 3 Hall (16-12) vs. Rock Falls/Oregon winner, 7:30 p.m.; Feb. 20 – Title game, 6:30 p.m.
Worth noting: Hall has not played either of its potential semifinal opponents or Riverdale. The Red Devils are looking for their first regional championship since winning four in a row from 2016-19. Hall last played in a regional final in 2019. Riverdale won the Hall Regional last season.
What’s next: Winner moves on to the Rock Falls Sectional to play the winner of the Stillman Valley Regional.
Schedule: Saturday – No. 8 Somonauk/Leland (12-17) at No. 7 Bureau Valley (12-19), 3 p.m., No. 12 Mendota (3-24) at No. 6 Sandwich (13-14), TBA; Tuesday – No. 1 Alleman (22-8) vs. Somonauk/BV winner, 6 p.m., No. 4 Princeton (19-9) vs. Mendota/Sandwich winner, 7:30 p.m.; Feb. 20 – Title game, 7 p.m.
Worth noting: Princeton, Mendota and Bureau Valley are looking to end long regional title droughts. The Tigresses last won a plaque in 2007, the Trojans in 2015 and the Storm in 2014. Princeton has lost in regional finals in each of the past two seasons. The Tigresses likely will face a familiar opponent if they reach this year’s final on their home floor in Alleman. The Pioneers beat Princeton 58-27 in a regional final last season en route to winning a sectional championship. Alleman also beat the Tigresses 60-35 this season Jan. 18. Princeton has beaten Mendota twice but hasn’t played Sandwich. The Trojans, who have not won since Dec. 20, haven’t faced Sandwich this season. Bureau Valley hasn’t played Somonauk or Alleman. The Storm enter the postseason on a high note as they’ve won their past two games, including scoring a school-record 86 points against Galva on Feb. 8.
What’s next: Winner advances to the Rock Falls Sectional to face the winner of the Aurora Central Catholic Regional.
Schedule: Saturday – No. 11 Midwest Central (8-17) at No. 8 Fieldcrest (15-13), 4 p.m., No. 12 Olympia (4-22) at Manual (19-11), TBA; Monday – No. 1 Deer-Creek Mackinaw (25-3) vs. Fieldcrest/MC winner, 6 p.m., No. 4 Eureka (23-7) vs. Olympia/Manual winner, 7:30 p.m.; Feb. 20 – Title game, 7 p.m.
Worth noting: Fieldcrest has not played Midwest Central but has played Deer Creek-Mackinaw, losing 59-32 on Jan. 16. The Knights are looking for their first regional title since winning four straight from 2019-23. Dee-Mack, which is ranked No. 7 in the latest AP Class 2A poll, has won two regional titles in a row.
What’s next: Winner advances to the Deer Creek-Mackinaw Sectional to play the winner of the Orion Regional.
Schedule: Saturday – No. 10 Putnam County (5-23) at No. 9 Earlville (9-20), 4:30 p.m., No. 11 Gardner-South Wilmington (6-22) at No. 5 St. Bede (18-12), 5 p.m.; Tuesday – No. 2 Amboy (21-7) vs. PC/Earlville winner, 6 p.m., No. 3 Marquette (20-10) vs. St. Bede/GSW winner, 7:30 p.m.; Feb. 20 – Title game, 6:30 p.m.
Worth noting: St. Bede placed fourth in Class 1A last season. The Bruins open their quest for a return trip at home against GSW before facing a familiar opponent in the semifinal if they get there. St. Bede has played Marquette three times this season, losing 53-39 on Dec. 2 and 56-45 on Jan. 13 before beating the Crusaders 49-38 in the Tri-County Conference Tournament final on Jan. 23. If the Bruins reach the championship, they’re likely to face another familiar foe in Amboy, which St. Bede beat 50-39 in last year’s regional final. Putnam County and Earlville have not played each other. Earlville will play Amboy in Thursday’s regular-season finale. The Panthers are looking for their first regional title since winning three straight from 2013-15, while the Red Raiders are looking for their first plaque since 1999.
What’s next: Winner advances to the Hinckley-Big Rock Sectional to play the winner of the Morgan Park Academy Regional.
Schedule: Saturday – No. 11 Lowpoint-Washburn (2-15) at No. 7 Midland (10-18), 1 p.m., No. 12 Peoria Heights (0-27) at No. 5 Henry-Senachwine (13-16), 1 p.m.; Monday – No. 1 Roanoke-Benson (24-5) vs. L-W/Midland winner, 6 p.m., No. 3 Mt. Pulaski (17-7) vs. Henry/Peoria Heights winner, 7:30 p.m.; Feb. 20 – Title game, 6 p.m.
Worth noting: Henry, which is looking for its first regional title since 1981, plays winless Peoria Heights to start the postseason. The Mallards will face Peoria Heights in their regular-season finale Thursday. Henry has not played Mt. Pulaski but has played fellow Tri-County Conference foes Roanoke-Benson, Midland and Lowpoint-Washburn. Henry lost three times to R-B, went 2-1 against Midland and beat L-W twice. Roanoke-Benson is receiving votes in the latest AP Class 1A Poll.
What’s next: Winner moves on to the Midland Sectional to face the winner of the Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley Regional.

Bill Walsh Automotive Group to close Coronet dealership in Peru – Shaw Local

Bill Walsh Automotive’s Coronet Dodge Chrysler Jeep dealership in Peru will close on Feb. 28. (Scott Anderson)
Bill Walsh Automotive’s Coronet Dodge Chrysler Jeep dealership in Peru will close Feb. 28.
Coronet Dodge started at 802 First St. in La Salle in 1971, and then moved in 1976 to its current location on Route 251 across from Peru Mall.
Thomas P. Walsh Jr. (Bill Walsh Sr.’s father) started Feb. 5, 1959, what would become the Bill Walsh Automotive Group with Sierra Dodge in Ottawa.
“After a long, proud history in La Salle-Peru, we have made the very challenging decision to close Coronet due to demands from the manufacturers, which would have made it difficult to continue our fair-pricing philosophy and culture we’ve maintained for years,” the dealership said in a news release.
Peru Mayor Ken Kolowski said the city has been monitoring the situation, hopeful of a possible merging or a buyout, but it has not heard any news on that front.
“It’s a very unfortunate situation, but I would say it’s a great location and a great opportunity for something new,” Kolowski said.
Customers will be able to service their Coronet Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram and pre-owned vehicles at Sierra Motors in Ottawa. The dealership will be communicating with its Mitsubishi and Fiat customers on arrangements for their service and parts needs.
