Princeton sending 5 wrestlers to state – Shaw Local

Sterling Newman’s Danny Kelly and Princeton’s Casey Etheridge wrestle at 165 pounds at the 1A Oregon Regional on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2025. (Earleen Hinton)
Princeton sent six wrestlers to the Class 1A Oregon Sectional on Saturday, and five of them advanced to the IHSA State Tournament next weekend.
Augustus Swanson (120 pounds), Kane Dauber (132) and Ace Christiansen (144) each placed third, while Casey Etheridge (165) and Cade Odell (285) finished fourth.
“It’s happiness, fatigue,” Odell said after his semifinal wrestleback. “I was elated. I was here my sophomore year and I lost in sudden death to a Lena-Winslow heavyweight at the time. So it’s nice to come back and do it here and actually make it out this time.”
Swanson, who placed fifth at state at 106 last year, lost to Richmond-Burton’s Adam Glauser in the semifinals but bounced back to win by fall in his semifinal wrestleback and by 13-5 major decision in the third-place match.
Oregon’s Nelson Benesh and Princeton’s Kane Dauber wrestle for third place at 132 pounds at the 1A Oregon Regional on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2025. (Earleen Hinton)
Dauber, a freshman, lost 20-15 in the semifinals but earned his state berth with a 12-6 decision in a semifinal wrestleback and a pin in the third-place match.
Christiansen, who finished third in state at 138 last season, lost by 15-3 major decision to Richmond-Burton’s Emmett Nelson in his semifinal. He won 7-1 in his semifinal wrestleback and won by medical forfeit in the third-place match.
Etheridge was edged 5-4 by Wheaton Academy’s Tyler Jones in the semifinals then won by 16-4 major decision in his semifinal wrestleback to earn a return trip to state before losing by 7-2 decision in the third-place match.
Odell, who placed fourth in state at 285 last year, lost 7-1 to St. Francis’ Jaylen Torres in the semifinals. He won 9-6 in his semifinal wrestleback then lost 4-3 in the third-place match.
“Earlier this year I dealt with a pretty bad injury, and I wasn’t even sure I was going to be able to wrestle at regionals,” Odell said. “Just coming back here and just being able to wrestle my butt off, it’s just all glory to God, really.
“It’s just kind of the bow on my career, you know.”

Also for Princeton, Jacob Paull (113) saw his season end in wrestlebacks.
St. Bede freshman Mikey Benge (113) came within a win of state as he lost by 21-4 technical fall to Dakota’s Brandon White in a semifinal wrestleback.
Max Moreno (126), Andre Pineda (157), Jordan Coventry (165) and Garrett Connelly (190) also lost in wrestelbacks for the Bruins.
Other area wrestlers whose season ended in wrestlebacks were Putnam CountyHall’s Alex Tucker (190) and Mendota’s Komen Denaul (132), Gavin Evans (157), Corbin Furar (175) and Angil Serrano (285).

Arukah Institute of Healing in Princeton, Ottawa receives $3.6 million from state – Shaw Local

Gov. JB Pritzker (left) announces a $3.6 million in investment in Arukah Institute of Healing on Jan. 7, 2025, in Normal, accompanied by Dr. Sarah Scruggs, founder & CEO of Arukah. (Photo provided by Cory Scott)
The Arukah Institute of Healing Inc., which serves Bureau, La Salle, Grundy, Marshall and Putnam counties, has been awarded $3.6 million as part of Gov. JB Pritzker’s $200 million statewide initiative to expand innovative health care services for underserved populations.
Arukah was one of only 13 recipients selected for this competitive grant through the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services and the Capital Development Board.
Pritzker announced the funding during a Jan. 7 news conference in Normal. He called the initiative a “first-of-its-kind collaboration” aimed at addressing root causes of health disparities, providing comprehensive care and strengthening health care infrastructure for underserved communities.
With this investment, Arukah will enhance its headquarters in Princeton while also expanding its reach with the purchase and development of a second location in Ottawa. This expansion reflects Arukah’s commitment to addressing the growing mental health and substance-use treatment needs in the region.
“[It’s] a transformational investment,” said Sarah Scruggs, founder and CEO of Arukah. “This investment is transformational not just for Arukah but for the communities we serve. It affirms our mission to address mental health and substance-use challenges at their roots, providing holistic, comprehensive care where it is needed most.
“At Arukah, we believe that true healing comes from understanding and treating the whole person – mind, body and spirit – while also addressing the social and environmental factors that shape health. This funding allows us to expand access, create lasting impact, and bring healing to more individuals and families.
“We are deeply grateful for the support of Gov. Pritzker, HFS and the Capital Development Board. With this investment, we are not just building facilities – we are building stronger, healthier communities.”
Arukah’s expansion will provide critical services in mental health, substance-use treatment and community-based wellness programs, ensuring that more individuals have access to the care they need closer to home.

Bureau County Sheriff’s Deputy Joseph Flanagan’s action avoided the worst-case scenario for a motorist who was injured in a Jan. 14 crash.
For his response, Flanagan received the Emergency Response Commendation with a Distinguished Action Bar for his uniform from the Princeton Fire Department. Flanagan was presented the honor Tuesday. It is the first time the fire department has given out this distinction for a law enforcement officer.
Flanagan responded Jan. 14 to a two-vehicle crash called into dispatch at 8:48 a.m. as a property damage-only report. When Flanagan arrived at the scene, he found the driver of one of the vehicles was injured, Princeton Fire Chief Scott Etheridge said.
Flanagan was at the scene with a motorist with life-threatening injuries. He called for fire/emergency medical services and began lifesaving measures to the driver. Flanagan applied two tourniquets to the driver, stopping significant, life-threatening blood loss, Etheridge said.
When the Princeton Fire Department arrived, Flanagan still was attending to the driver.
“If Deputy Flanagan would have not been on scene in the time he was and reacted in the manner he did, this motor vehicle accident would have had a different outcome for the driver,” Etheridge said.

Letter: Keep them in Chicago – Shaw Local

Keyboard (Shaw Local File Photo)
Bureau County Sheriff Jim Reed went to the Bureau County Board with a proposal suggesting filling the county jail with inmates from the infamous Cook County Jail in Chicago.
According to the newspaper story of a couple of weeks ago his reason for this “opportunity” is that fortunately the population at the jail is or has been lower than capacity and by bringing in Chicago’s “best” would generate revenue for the county. His justification for this is that there would be money coming in from Cook County, which could be used for maintenance of the jail (it shouldn’t need much upkeep as it was just retrofitted a couple of years ago) and the food contract for the inmates’ meals would be more realistically in line with the jail population (it sounds like more money is paid the vendor than what is needed to feed the inmates). Another point brought up in the newspaper article was that the sheriff would have money available to put more patrolmen on the county’s roads. (I was in the courthouse last week and there were three uniformed deputies watching as I went through the detection mechanism).
Several years ago I was at a religious retreat in Moline. The pastor of one of the Lutheran churches there told me that Moline was a nice community until the state of Illinois built the prison at East Moline. From that time on families and friends of those incarcerated would come to visit. They would drive around and see a nice medium-size town and some would decide to rent or buy a home in the Moline area near their person “serving time.” When that happened the Moline community became a haven for drugs, robberies, car-jacking and murder.
The people of Bureau county DON’T WANT THAT TO HAPPEN HERE. I wrote a letter to each Bureau County Board member pleading that they VOTE AGAINST bringing in Cook County’s “overflow.”
My wife, Loretta, served with honesty, dignity, intelligence, faithfullness and a sincere interest in the people of Bureau County and the betterment of the county for 16 years. Unfortunately, now she is enduring dementia. But she also AGAINST Sheriff Reed’s proposal.
If you are AGAINST loading Bureau county Jail with Chicago‘s residue contact your Bureau County Board member and let them know.
