Nine retired professionals were awarded with the honorary title of emeritus during the Illinois Valley Community College Board of Trustees meeting in December.
Recognized during the meeting Jan. 16 were administrators Robert P. Marshall and Bonnie Campbell and faculty members Stephen Alvin, Rose Marie Lynch and Jane Sack. Also awarded emeritus status in December were Sue Isermann, Daniel O’Connor, James Stevenson and Linda Hawkins.
In other action, the board approved a new early childhood education certification that focuses on creating new leaders and mentors in the field.
The ECE Director Qualified Certificate introduces a class in coaching and leadership to existing administration and early-childhood education courses to create a streamlined and comprehensive program tailored to childcare workers who want to advance, ECE program coordinator Tammy Landgraf said. Licensed childcare facilities are required to have director-qualified employees on-site, and trainer/mentors are always in demand, she said.
Graduates will be able to list a program of study that sets out their qualifications to licensing representatives. The new certification, recommended by the college curriculum committee, still needs state approval, but the first class is expected to enroll in the 2025-26 school year.
In her monthly report, President Tracy Morris noted that:

Wrestling notebook: Princeton taking record 5 wrestlers to state – Shaw Local News Network

Last year, Princeton qualified a then school-record four wrestlers for the IHSA state individual wrestling tournament, bringing home three state medals.
The Tigers have one-upped that record this year, sending five wrestlers to Champaign with an eye on setting a new record for state medalists.
Making a return trip to state will be junior Augustus Swanson (120 pounds) and senior Ace Christiansen (144), who each placed third at Saturday’s Class 1A Oregon Sectional, and junior Casey Etheridge (165) and senior Cade Odell (285), who finished fourth.
They will be joined by freshman Kane Dauber, who placed third at 132.
“It’s big for the program to get five down there,” Princeton coach Steve Amy said. “These guys have been working hard for a very long time to get to this point. It’s really a testament to our guys’ dedication and determination to continue to compete in tough situations.
“It’s a school record but hopefully we’re not done breaking those. Hopefully we can bring home five medals this weekend.”

The Tigers are excited to go back.
“It is a great feeling to be able to return the same amount of guys as last year and even adding a great talent like Kane,” said Etheridge, who seeks his first IHSA state medal. “We are happy to be able to compete next weekend but our goals and ambitions don’t end with just being there. We have high aspirations for next weekend and we are ready to compete with the best in the state.”
“It’s great having five of us make it out of our sectional which is always one of the toughest ones in the state and is really cool,” said Christiansen, who placed third at state a year ago.
“It’s definitely something special that’s for sure,” said Swanson, who placed fifth at 113 pounds last year. “It is a huge honor being apart of this team with five of us making it. There was definitely people who doubted me since i went up to 120, but I proved to them and myself that I can do it.”
Odell, a fourth-place state medalist last year, had the most tedious ride of the Tigers. He fell to Jaylen Torres of St. Francis 7-1 in the semifinals at 285 and trailed by one point with 30 seconds in his semifinal wrestleback before scoring with an escape and takedown for a 9-6 win over Colin Kraus of Richmond-Burton.
Odell dropped a 4-3 decision to Byron’s Jared Claunch, finishing fourth.
“It’s happiness, fatigue,” Odell said after the sectional. “I was elated. I was here my sophomore year and I lost in sudden death to a Lena-Winslow heavyweight at the time. So it’s nice to come back and do it here and actually make it out this time.
“Earlier this year I dealt with a pretty bad injury and I wasn’t even sure I was going to be able to wrestle at regionals. Just coming back here and just being able to wrestle my butt off, it’s just all glory to God, really. It’s just kind of the bow on my career, you know.”
Swanson lost to Richmond-Burton’s Adam Glauser in the semifinals but bounced back to win by fall in 3:45 in his semifinal wrestleback against Byron’s Jackson Norris and by 13-5 major decision over Oregon’s Isaiah Perez to take third place.
Dauber lost 20-15 Riverdale’s Dean Wainwright in the semifinals but earned his state berth with a 12-6 decision in a semifinal wrestleback over Newman’s Landon Blanton and a pin at 4:45 over Oregon’s Nelson Benesh in the third-place match.
Christiansen lost by 15-3 major decision to Richmond-Burton’s Emmett Nelson in his semifinal. He won a 7-1 decision over Rockridge’s Tomas Sowards in his semifinal wrestleback and won by medical forfeit in the third-place match.
Etheridge dropped a 5-4 decision to Wheaton Academy’s Tyler Jones in the semifinals then won by 16-4 major decision over Marquette’s Reily Leifheit in his semifinal wrestleback to earn a return trip to state. He lost a 7-2 decision Newman’s Daniel Kelly in the third-place match.

Princeton freshman Jacob Paull (113) saw his season end in wrestlebacks.
Prior to last year, Princeton’s best medal take at state had been two medalists which it did six times – 1990, 1993, 1995, 2002, 2003, 2019.
All of the Tigers will be wrestling in opening round Class 1A matchup starting at noon Thursday at the State Farm Center in Champaign.
Swanson (28-8) will face Coal City senior Culan Lindemuth (33-11) at 120; Dauber (46-3) drew Brenden Rayl (34-1), a senior from Belleville Althoff at 132; Christiansen will square off with Logan Riggs (35-12), a junior from Roxana at 144 and Etheridge (44-4) will face Adam Haddad (36-2), a senior sectional champion from Northridge at 165 while Odell (31-3) will wrestle David McCarthy (28-2), a senior sectional champ and returning state medalist (fifth) from Chicago De La Salle.
Lindemuth, Rayl and Riggs were all sectional runners-up.
“We have some matchups. At this point in the season, everyone is good so we just have to stick to doing what we’re good at,” Amy said.

Bureau County Sheriff’s Deputy Joseph Flanagan’s action avoided the worst-case scenario for a motorist who was injured in a Jan. 14 crash.
For his response, Flanagan received the Emergency Response Commendation with a Distinguished Action Bar for his uniform from the Princeton Fire Department. Flanagan was presented the honor Tuesday. It is the first time the fire department has given out this distinction for a law enforcement officer.
Flanagan responded Jan. 14 to a two-vehicle crash called into dispatch at 8:48 a.m. as a property damage-only report. When Flanagan arrived at the scene, he found the driver of one of the vehicles was injured, Princeton Fire Chief Scott Etheridge said.
Flanagan was at the scene with a motorist with life-threatening injuries. He called for fire/emergency medical services and began lifesaving measures to the driver. Flanagan applied two tourniquets to the driver, stopping significant, life-threatening blood loss, Etheridge said.
When the Princeton Fire Department arrived, Flanagan still was attending to the driver.
“If Deputy Flanagan would have not been on scene in the time he was and reacted in the manner he did, this motor vehicle accident would have had a different outcome for the driver,” Etheridge said.

NewsTribune area 2025 girls basketball regional preview – Shaw Local News Network

Members of the St. Bede girls basketball team react during a Class 1A state semifinal last season at CEFCU Arena in Normal. The Bruins begin their quest for a return trip to state Saturday against Gardner-South Wilmington in the Class 1A St. Bede Regional. (Scott Anderson)
Girls basketball regionals begin Saturday with the quarterfinal round.
Here’s a look at all the regionals involving teams in the NewsTribune area.
Schedule: Saturday – No. 8 La Salle-Peru (11-16) at No. 6 Metamora (15-13), 6 p.m.; Monday – No. 1 Washington (29-1) vs. L-P/Metamora winner, 6 p.m., No. 3 Morris (23-5) vs. No. 5 Bloomington (15-11), 7:30 p.m.; Feb. 20 – Title game, 7 p.m.
Worth noting: La Salle-Peru has not beaten any opponent in the regional. The Cavaliers lost 52-37 to Metamora on Dec. 16 in the Ottawa Holiday Tournament and also have lost twice to Morris in Interstate 8 Conference play. L-P has not won a regional since 1991. Washington is ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press Class 3A poll. The Panthers’ only loss is a 46-45 setback against Morton.
What’s next: Winner advances to the Ottawa Sectional to face the winner of the Richwoods Regional.
Schedule: Saturday – No. 10 Morrison (4-24) at No. 9 Erie-Prophetstown (6-18), 1 p.m., No. 11 Rock Falls (3-26) at No. 5 Oregon (13-14), TBA; Monday – No. 2 Riverdale (19-9) vs. Morrison/E-P winner, 6 p.m., No. 3 Hall (16-12) vs. Rock Falls/Oregon winner, 7:30 p.m.; Feb. 20 – Title game, 6:30 p.m.
Worth noting: Hall has not played either of its potential semifinal opponents or Riverdale. The Red Devils are looking for their first regional championship since winning four in a row from 2016-19. Hall last played in a regional final in 2019. Riverdale won the Hall Regional last season.
What’s next: Winner moves on to the Rock Falls Sectional to play the winner of the Stillman Valley Regional.
Schedule: Saturday – No. 8 Somonauk/Leland (12-17) at No. 7 Bureau Valley (12-19), 3 p.m., No. 12 Mendota (3-24) at No. 6 Sandwich (13-14), TBA; Tuesday – No. 1 Alleman (22-8) vs. Somonauk/BV winner, 6 p.m., No. 4 Princeton (19-9) vs. Mendota/Sandwich winner, 7:30 p.m.; Feb. 20 – Title game, 7 p.m.
Worth noting: Princeton, Mendota and Bureau Valley are looking to end long regional title droughts. The Tigresses last won a plaque in 2007, the Trojans in 2015 and the Storm in 2014. Princeton has lost in regional finals in each of the past two seasons. The Tigresses likely will face a familiar opponent if they reach this year’s final on their home floor in Alleman. The Pioneers beat Princeton 58-27 in a regional final last season en route to winning a sectional championship. Alleman also beat the Tigresses 60-35 this season Jan. 18. Princeton has beaten Mendota twice but hasn’t played Sandwich. The Trojans, who have not won since Dec. 20, haven’t faced Sandwich this season. Bureau Valley hasn’t played Somonauk or Alleman. The Storm enter the postseason on a high note as they’ve won their past two games, including scoring a school-record 86 points against Galva on Feb. 8.
What’s next: Winner advances to the Rock Falls Sectional to face the winner of the Aurora Central Catholic Regional.
Schedule: Saturday – No. 11 Midwest Central (8-17) at No. 8 Fieldcrest (15-13), 4 p.m., No. 12 Olympia (4-22) at Manual (19-11), TBA; Monday – No. 1 Deer-Creek Mackinaw (25-3) vs. Fieldcrest/MC winner, 6 p.m., No. 4 Eureka (23-7) vs. Olympia/Manual winner, 7:30 p.m.; Feb. 20 – Title game, 7 p.m.
Worth noting: Fieldcrest has not played Midwest Central but has played Deer Creek-Mackinaw, losing 59-32 on Jan. 16. The Knights are looking for their first regional title since winning four straight from 2019-23. Dee-Mack, which is ranked No. 7 in the latest AP Class 2A poll, has won two regional titles in a row.
What’s next: Winner advances to the Deer Creek-Mackinaw Sectional to play the winner of the Orion Regional.
Schedule: Saturday – No. 10 Putnam County (5-23) at No. 9 Earlville (9-20), 4:30 p.m., No. 11 Gardner-South Wilmington (6-22) at No. 5 St. Bede (18-12), 5 p.m.; Tuesday – No. 2 Amboy (21-7) vs. PC/Earlville winner, 6 p.m., No. 3 Marquette (20-10) vs. St. Bede/GSW winner, 7:30 p.m.; Feb. 20 – Title game, 6:30 p.m.
Worth noting: St. Bede placed fourth in Class 1A last season. The Bruins open their quest for a return trip at home against GSW before facing a familiar opponent in the semifinal if they get there. St. Bede has played Marquette three times this season, losing 53-39 on Dec. 2 and 56-45 on Jan. 13 before beating the Crusaders 49-38 in the Tri-County Conference Tournament final on Jan. 23. If the Bruins reach the championship, they’re likely to face another familiar foe in Amboy, which St. Bede beat 50-39 in last year’s regional final. Putnam County and Earlville have not played each other. Earlville will play Amboy in Thursday’s regular-season finale. The Panthers are looking for their first regional title since winning three straight from 2013-15, while the Red Raiders are looking for their first plaque since 1999.
What’s next: Winner advances to the Hinckley-Big Rock Sectional to play the winner of the Morgan Park Academy Regional.
Schedule: Saturday – No. 11 Lowpoint-Washburn (2-15) at No. 7 Midland (10-18), 1 p.m., No. 12 Peoria Heights (0-27) at No. 5 Henry-Senachwine (13-16), 1 p.m.; Monday – No. 1 Roanoke-Benson (24-5) vs. L-W/Midland winner, 6 p.m., No. 3 Mt. Pulaski (17-7) vs. Henry/Peoria Heights winner, 7:30 p.m.; Feb. 20 – Title game, 6 p.m.
Worth noting: Henry, which is looking for its first regional title since 1981, plays winless Peoria Heights to start the postseason. The Mallards will face Peoria Heights in their regular-season finale Thursday. Henry has not played Mt. Pulaski but has played fellow Tri-County Conference foes Roanoke-Benson, Midland and Lowpoint-Washburn. Henry lost three times to R-B, went 2-1 against Midland and beat L-W twice. Roanoke-Benson is receiving votes in the latest AP Class 1A Poll.
What’s next: Winner moves on to the Midland Sectional to face the winner of the Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley Regional.

Princeton, Mendota to meet in tonight’s regional semifinals – Shaw Local News Network

Princeton’s Asa Gartin drives to the basket against Mendota at Prouty Gym. The longtime rivals meet in tonight’s regional semifinals at Princeton at 7:30 p.m. (Kevin Hieronymus)
