Putnam County school referendum appears to have failed – Shaw Local News Network

Putnam County residents decided Tuesday they do not want the school district to borrow money and move to a single campus in Granville, according to unofficial results. (Scott Anderson)
Putnam County residents decided Tuesday they do not want the school district to borrow money and move to a single campus in Granville, according to unofficial results.
The question on the ballot specifically asked: Shall the Board of Education of Putnam County Community Unit School District Number 535, Putnam, La Salle and Marshall Counties, Illinois, alter, repair and equip school buildings, including constructing security and health/life safety improvements, increasing classroom, cafeteria and gymnasium space and replacing heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, improve school sites and issue its bonds to the amount of $34 million for the purpose of paying the costs thereof?
According to unofficial results, with all precincts counted, there were 1,630 voters that said no to the question and 1,220 that said yes.
A consolidation would have joined the high school and elementary school there, after the district has found its current facilities need more than $60 million in updates.
If the referendum had passed, the schools in Hennepin and McNabb would have been closed and renovations made to house all Putnam County district students at the existing Granville campus. The cost to make the move from the old buildings to a new facility will be about $34 million, but does not include the cost of improvements identified for the high school.

Princeton Rotary names Michael Stutzke as club’s Rotarian of the Year – Shaw Local News Network

The Princeton Rotary Club recently honored Michael Stutzke as Rotarian of the Year at its annual auction Saturday, Nov. 11. The award is given to a Rotarian who exhibits service above self and promotes Rotary through their involvement and action.
“(Stutzke) has made significant contributions to Rotary and the community in the form of leadership and in the advancement of ideas and service,” a news release read. “Through his Rotary service, he has made the community a better place to live and work.”
Stutzke worked as an educator and athletic director for 22 years. He is also a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow, U.S. Marine Corps Veteran and civic leader.
Stutzke also created the Princeton Rotary Club ShrimpFest.
“(Stutzke) has a vision for the Princeton club,” a news release read. “He had an idea that, for our area of the country, seemed a little far-fetched, unusual, and downright strange. When you live in the heart of the Midwest, most local community celebrations have rib-eyes, pork chops or corn on the menu.”
The festival’s proceeds have been used to benefit Princeton High Schools students through scholarships as he believes every student should be afforded the opportunity to achieve a college or vocational degree.

Sex offender pleads guilty to loitering near Ransom school – Shaw Local News Network

Tomure D. Adams (Photo provided by La Salle County Jail)
A registered child sex offender pleaded guilty Thursday to loitering near Ransom grade school. Tomure Adams could face three years in prison.
Adams, 50, of Bolingbrook entered a blind plea in La Salle County Circuit Court to one count of sex offender in a school zone, a Class 4 felony. A second such count was dismissed.
Chief Judge H. Chris Ryan Jr. scheduled a sentencing hearing for May 15. Adams will at that time have an opportunity to speak in open court.
Adams was charged in December after school officials spotted a “suspicious person” in a vehicle driving around the school building on Dec. 3 and “loitered there some time.”
Assistant La Salle County State’s Attorney Jeremiah Adams said in open court that the school superintendent confronted the driver, later identified as Adams, and took a photo of his license plate. The suspect, he said, told the superintendent he was there to meet an individual he named; but the person identified had no connection to Ransom school.
La Salle County sheriff’s deputies tracked the plate number and questioned Tomure Adams, who was found to have a 1999 conviction from Will County for aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Adams admitted to police he was at the school about 10 minutes.

Downtown Ottawa businesses to take part in Pink Friday – Shaw Local News Network

Downtown Ottawa will be joining Streator among the many cities nationally celebrating Pink Friday on Friday. (Derek Barichello)
Downtown Ottawa will be joining Streator among the many cities nationally celebrating Pink Friday on Friday.
Pink Friday, conducted annually the Friday before Black Friday, looks to bring in traffic to local businesses by offering exclusive sales and promotions.
“Pink Friday is a great initiative to help support small and local businesses,” the Ottawa Downtown Association posted to its Facebook page. “Our downtown community is the heart of Ottawa and what keeps it moving. Even a like, comment or share makes all the difference. Or grab your friends and wear your best ugly Christmas sweater to have a great time making your Christmas list.”
The Earthly Muse, Bold and Curvy Boutique, Hey Sweetie, Heartland By Hand and RPS Toys are among the businesses the organization highlighted where sales will be taking place.

Letter: Keep them in Chicago – Shaw Local News Network

Keyboard (Shaw Local File Photo)
Bureau County Sheriff Jim Reed went to the Bureau County Board with a proposal suggesting filling the county jail with inmates from the infamous Cook County Jail in Chicago.
According to the newspaper story of a couple of weeks ago his reason for this “opportunity” is that fortunately the population at the jail is or has been lower than capacity and by bringing in Chicago’s “best” would generate revenue for the county. His justification for this is that there would be money coming in from Cook County, which could be used for maintenance of the jail (it shouldn’t need much upkeep as it was just retrofitted a couple of years ago) and the food contract for the inmates’ meals would be more realistically in line with the jail population (it sounds like more money is paid the vendor than what is needed to feed the inmates). Another point brought up in the newspaper article was that the sheriff would have money available to put more patrolmen on the county’s roads. (I was in the courthouse last week and there were three uniformed deputies watching as I went through the detection mechanism).
Several years ago I was at a religious retreat in Moline. The pastor of one of the Lutheran churches there told me that Moline was a nice community until the state of Illinois built the prison at East Moline. From that time on families and friends of those incarcerated would come to visit. They would drive around and see a nice medium-size town and some would decide to rent or buy a home in the Moline area near their person “serving time.” When that happened the Moline community became a haven for drugs, robberies, car-jacking and murder.
The people of Bureau county DON’T WANT THAT TO HAPPEN HERE. I wrote a letter to each Bureau County Board member pleading that they VOTE AGAINST bringing in Cook County’s “overflow.”
My wife, Loretta, served with honesty, dignity, intelligence, faithfullness and a sincere interest in the people of Bureau County and the betterment of the county for 16 years. Unfortunately, now she is enduring dementia. But she also AGAINST Sheriff Reed’s proposal.
If you are AGAINST loading Bureau county Jail with Chicago‘s residue contact your Bureau County Board member and let them know.
Dick Volker, of Princeton
