The Rotary Club of Princeton awarded $10,000 in grants to 10 local nonprofits through its “Love Our Community” program.
Three organizations received their checks Tuesday at the club’s noon meeting: Illinois Critical Access Hospital Network, Flags of Freedom, and Club 56.
Illinois Critical Access Hospital Network will use its $1,000 grant to pay for suicide intervention skills training.
Flags of Freedom will use the funds for flag maintenance and repair.
Club 56 is using its grant for summer camp programming.
The “Love Our Community” grant program awards funds to local nonprofits in appreciation for the resources and time they dedicate to serving the community. The program is funded by Rotary Club fundraisers and activities.
The Rotary Club of Princeton has served the community since 1920. The organization’s mission is to model service above self, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its business, professional, and community leaders’ fellowship.

Princeton High School will host the Tiger Cup Scholastic Bowl Tournament on Saturday, with 24 high school teams competing in academic competition.
Teams from across north and central Illinois will participate in a morning round-robin schedule before moving to afternoon championship and consolation rounds, according to the school.
This year’s field includes Princeton, Dunlap, Moline, Coal City, Byron, Mendota, Sherrard, Riverdale, Pecatonica, Eureka, Canton, United Township, Kewanee, Pekin, Geneseo, La SallePeru, Erie-Prophetstown, Putnam County, Roanoke-Benson, Sterling, Oregon, Limestone and Annawan.
“This is one of those days where the whole building is just buzzing, you’ve got dozens of kids who are excited to play Scholastic Bowl, coaches reconnecting, and great matches being played all around,” said Head Coach Brody Anderson. “We’re proud to host a tournament that’s competitive, welcoming, and a great experience for every team that makes the trip.”
The tournament doubled its field from 12 to 24 teams this year, Anderson said.
Princeton won the inaugural Tiger Cup last year. Riverdale took second place, Roanoke-Benson took third and La Salle-Peru took fourth.
Scholastic bowl invitational tournaments offer more games and a wider variety of opponents than conference play, allowing students to compete outside their usual schedule.

Two Illinois DAR chapters celebrate 130 years of service and friendship – Shaw Local


The Princeton-Illinois and Illini chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution celebrated their mutual 130th anniversary Friday with a luncheon at Lock 16 Cafe in La Salle.
The Princeton-Illinois and Illini chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution celebrated their mutual 130th anniversary Friday with a luncheon at Lock 16 Cafe in La Salle.
The two chapters are among the oldest in Illinois and the nation. Princeton-Illinois was chartered on April 13, 1896, as the 12th chapter in Illinois. Illini was chartered one month later on May 29, 1897, as the 13th chapter.
The chapters honored their organizing regents: Darlene Stevens Reeve, daughter of Justus Stevens, the first mayor of Princeton, and Phebe Anthony Sherwood of Ottawa.
State Regent Marria Blinn, Honorary State Regent Debra Coe, State Chaplain Debby Katzman and District II Director Laurie Perry attended the celebration.
The Daughters of the American Revolution is a women’s service organization dedicated to promoting historic preservation, education and patriotism. The organization honors current military and veterans while fostering lifelong friendships.
Any woman age 18 and older may join by documenting her lineage to a man or woman who aided the cause of American Independence through military, civil or patriotic service.

AARP offers free tax preparation at Bureau County Senior Center – Shaw Local


Bureau County Senior Center
The AARP Foundation will offer free tax preparation services at the Bureau County Senior Center in Princeton beginning Feb. 13.
The Tax-Aide program provides free in-person tax assistance and preparation through April 10. All volunteers are IRS-certified tax counselors.
Appointments are scheduled between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays.
Although the program is aimed at older adults with a low to moderate income, anyone may use Tax-Aide regardless of age. AARP membership is not required.
To schedule an appointment, call the Bureau County Senior Center at 815-879-3981 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. beginning Monday, Feb. 2.
The Bureau County Senior Center is located in Princeton.
