Planned Parenthood in Ottawa to close in March – Shaw Local News Network

A Planned Parenthood health center in Ottawa is scheduled to close in March because of financial challenges and rising healthcare costs. The closure is part of a larger realignment by Planned Parenthood of Illinois. (Bill Freskos)
Planned Parenthood of Illinois will close four health centers in March, including the location in Ottawa.
The closures will affect other locations in Decatur, Bloomington and Englewood in Chicago. None of these locations provided procedural abortion care.
According to Planned Parenthood, Ottawa’s location offered birth control, emergency contraception, pregnancy testing and planning, vaccines, consultation for sexual and reproductive health care concerns, HIV services and other services.
According to a news release, the closures are because of financial challenges and rising health care costs. The organization also will downsize its administrative staff and offer displaced health center staff comparable positions or opportunities to transition to telehealth.
Patients from the closed locations will be welcomed at 13 other Planned Parenthood health centers across the state, with expanded availability at the Champaign, Peoria, Springfield and Roseland centers.
Also, Planned Parenthood will increase access to virtual care through telehealth appointments and the PPDirect app.
“Patient care is and will always be our No. 1 priority,” said Tonya Tucker, interim president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Illinois. “However, rising care costs and lower reimbursement rates from insurers are jeopardizing our sustainability. We are making these difficult decisions today to ensure we can continue providing care in the future.”
According to the release, the closures are part of an effort to ensure the organization’s long-term sustainability after the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022.
Since 2022, Illinois has seen a 47% rise in overall abortion care patients, with almost a quarter of those coming from other states.
As part of its efforts to expand access to those affected by the closure, Planned Parenthood will begin offering services through the PPDirect app in February.
Patients using the app will be able to complete a health questionnaire reviewed by a planned parenthood medical professional.
Patients who qualify then will receive medication abortion pills by mail or be scheduled for an in-person appointment.

Tony’s Barbershop in Peru is under new ownership.
Rene Alfaro purchased the barbershop at 815 Peoria St. from Lori Keenan, who retired.
A grand opening is scheduled for 4 p.m. Monday.
Alfaro received her license in 2007 at Educators of Beauty and has been cutting hair for 18 years.
“I pride myself in cutting for the whole family, but over time I noticed a lack of connection with customers,” Alfaro said. “I wanted a shop of my own where customers can become friends. I worked for corporate salons and for the longest time I wanted to have a place of my own to do just that.”
She met Keenan last summer through a lifelong customer of Keenan’s. After vetting Alfaro for the job, Keenan trusted her to continue the legacy of Tony’s Barbershop, she said.
“I am living a dream come true alongside my husband, Victor, who helps me manage our shop,” she said. “My goal is to continue taking care of all existing customers and new with great pride and treat everyone like family when they visit us here,” she said.
Tony’s Barbershop is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. For an appointment, call 815-223-7258. Walk-ins are welcome.

Operator of Pleasant View in Ottawa files for bankruptcy protection – Shaw Local News Network

Lutheran Life Communities, which operates Pleasant View in Ottawa and other retirement homes in suburban Chicago, downstate Illinois and Indiana, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this week, court filings show. (Derek Barichello)
Lutheran Life Communities, which operates Pleasant View in Ottawa and other retirement homes in suburban Chicago, downstate Illinois and Indiana, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this week, court filings show.
Lutheran Life Communities “has been investigating strategic alternatives for addressing the financial needs of the company and its affiliates, reorganizing their business, maximizing the value of the assets of the company and its affiliates, and protecting the company’s affiliates from the appointment of a receiver,” according to a resolution approved Monday by the nonprofit’s board of directors.
The resolution was included Tuesday in a 19-page Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Chicago. Officials couldn’t be reached for comment Wednesday.
The company has between $10 million and $50 million in liabilities, $10 million to $50 million in assets, and fewer than 50 creditors, the filing indicates.
The largest creditor is listed as Select Rehabilitation, a Glenview firm that offers contract therapy services and holds an unsecured claim of $808,084.
The next largest – with a $446,990 unsecured claim – is the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, which provides health care coverage for people who qualify for Medicaid.
Others on the list of creditors include Downers Grove general contractor CR Improvements, which is owed $255,294, and Direct Energy Business, an electricity and natural gas retailer that billed $185,587.
The numbers are far smaller than Friendship Village of Schaumburg’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in summer 2023. The largest continuing care retirement community in the state – since purchased at bankruptcy auction by Encore Healthcare Services of New York – had between 200 and 999 creditors, the largest of which was UMB Bank with an unsecured claim of $75.4 million.
Located at 505 College Ave., Pleasant View announced an expansion of its cottage homes in August 2024. It offers independent residential living, assisted living, short-term rehabilitation, memory support and skilled nursing.
Lutheran Life Communities also operates Luther Oaks in Bloomington, Lutheran Homes in Arlington Heights and Wittenberg Village in Crown Point, Indiana.
The entities filed individual petitions for bankruptcy relief, but a hearing was scheduled Friday to administer the cases together.
Court filings show that the company in May retained the law firm Squire Patton Boggs to serve as its primary bankruptcy and restructuring counsel. In recent days, officials added McDonald Hopkins as additional counsel. OnePoint Partners was hired in April as financial adviser.

Bureau County Board tables inmate deal with Cook County Jail – Shaw Local News Network

Bureau County Sheriff Jim Reed listens Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2025, during a meeting of the Bureau County Board. The board, partly at Reed’s urging, tabled an intergovernmental agreement with Cook County for overflow inmates to be housed in Bureau County Jail. Though Reed said there was “misinformation” about the agreement, he recommended the board study it in more detail. (Tom Collins)
Bureau County Jail may yet house overflow inmates from Chicago, but the Bureau County Board tabled the proposal for additional study and discussion.
The County Board was scheduled to vote Tuesday on an intergovernmental agreement to hold inmates from the Cook County Jail at a rate of $65 per day.
Sheriff Jim Reed said, however, he recommended the board postpone final action to study the issue more closely – and to sift through social media feedback that Reed said was misguided and inaccurate.
“To put it bluntly, we don’t want them here.”
“There’s a lot of false misinformation about this,” Reed said, urging the board to send the proposal to committee.
It was tabled by a roll call vote of 11-3. Those who voted no – Republicans Sandy Hoos, Marsha Lilley and August Block – signaled they were ready to kill the intergovernmental agreement. With the measure tabled, discussion resumes at a committee meeting at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 5.

Besides bringing in revenue, Reed said additional inmates would be welcome because the Bureau County Jail needs to be occupied and used lest it fall into disrepair. Similarly, the county has entered into food and service contracts and risks losing money by not keeping the daily census afloat.
Leasing overflow space to overcrowded jails is an arrangement that has worked for La Salle County. Jason Edgcomb, superintendent of La Salle County Jail, said intergovernmental agreements with other counties have generated needed revenue. Cook County alone brings in about $15,000 a month.
The out-of-towners haven’t created issues for corrections officers. Most, Edgcomb said, are glad to be out of inner-city lockup and “they don’t give us any problems.”
Such arguments fell flat with the residents who rose to speak during the public comment period who expressed concerns or flat-out opposed it.
“I think it is a terrible idea with far-reaching, negative consequences,” said Amy Thompson, who said she foresaw numerous problems including criminals released into the local community. She added later, “To put it bluntly, we don’t want them here.”
Mary Lynn May said she wanted assurances that Cook County would fetch and remove discharged inmates upon release. She also wanted clarification on where the new revenue would go.
“I myself do not see an upside in any of this,” Terry Smallwood said. “I have a lot more questions than answers.”
“My question is,” said Janet Day, “is the continued viability and safety of our community at risk?”
Hoos said her constituents were overwhelmingly opposed to the proposal and, “We know for every one complaint there’s probably 15 others.”
