BUREAU COUNTY, Ill. — A 3-year-old child was killed after being shot as police responded to a hostage situation on Sunday in rural Bureau County, Illinois. 
The Bureau County Sheriff’s Office and Princeton Police Department responded to a domestic disturbance call at a trailer park in the 2700 block of East Street on May 10. Illinois State Police assisted with perimeter security. 
ISP said a man was armed and holding several people hostage inside the trailer, including children. Officers entered the home and shots were fired, ISP said in its press release.
The man and the 3-year-old child were hit by gunfire, ISP said. The child was taken to the hospital, where they were pronounced deceased. An autopsy showed that the child “suffered a gunshot injury inconsistent with sustaining life,” according to the Bureau County Coroner. 
The child was identified as 3-year-old Damian Camacho. 
The man whom the ISP said took the group hostage was also taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds. He was identified as Anthony D. Rodriguez. He faces three counts of aggravated unlawful restraint, two counts of domestic battery and three counts of aggravated assault. 
Off camera, News 8 spoke with several people who were in the home at the time of the incident.
Damian’s mother said that Rodriguez was armed with a knife and was threatening to hurt her children. When police got to the scene, she said he locked himself and three children in his bedroom, threatening to kill them if police entered the home. 
Soon after, she said police kicked the door down, and that shots were fired immediately after. She said there was too much chaos in the moment to see how her son died. 
The mom said Damian was a joyful kid. A GoFundMe has been set up to help cover funeral expenses. 
ISP and the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office have not provided any additional details to News 8 or the family, saying it’s an active and ongoing investigation.  
News 8 will provide updates on this incident as they are made available. We have submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for the officers’ body-worn camera video. That was denied due to the ongoing investigation, but we will work to obtain the video when it can be made available.

Photos: Semi rollover slows traffic on Interstate 80 near La Salle – Shaw Local

A single semi rollover occurred in the eastbound lane of Interstate 80 at the Interstate 39 interchange on Thursday, May 28, 2026 near La Salle. The incident happened shortly after 7a.m. Illinois State Police, Illinois Department of Transportation, Utica and La Sallle fire and EMS were all dispatched to the scene. The driver was uninjured and a leak was reported coming from the engine.

Princeton Culver’s Manager Kendall King accepted to National Training Team – Shaw Local

The General Manager of the Princeton Culver’s, Kendall King, has been accepted to the Culver’s National Training Team. Members of the team are asked to travel to new Culver’s locations and support the new restaurant before and after a grand opening.
King’s first assignment on the NTT was in Missouri, where she helped train the new staff for their opening day. King’s long-term goal is to become a Culver’s franchisee in one of the southern states.
“(King) is an exceptional leader with high energy and a need to help people grow and develop,” Owner/Operator of Culver’s in Princeton Michele Davis said. “She continues to push herself to be better. There is no doubt that she makes Culver’s better.”
The Culver’s NTT represents the best of their employees in over 900 restaurants. To join the team, a member applies before undergoing evaluations with a franchise business consultant.

There was a pile up on Interstate 80 just west of Princeton Thursday afternoon.
The Illinois State Police were called to eastbound I-80 at around 4:30 for the report of a five-vehicle crash that involved at least one semi. Troopers say there were injuries and there was lane blockage. In fact, all lanes of I-80 just west of Princeton were closed following the crash with all lanes not being re-opened until nearly 3 hours after the wreck.

Tornado Warning issued for southeastern Putnam County – Shaw Local

The National Weather Service in the Quad Cities issued a tornado warning Tuesday evening for southeastern Putnam County, warning residents of a severe storm capable of producing a tornado and tennis ball-sized hail.
The warning, issued at 8:15 p.m., remains in effect until 8:45 p.m. At the time of the alert, a severe thunderstorm with radar-indicated rotation was located over Lake Wildwood, about 8 miles northeast of Lacon, and moving east at 35 mph.
The storm is expected to reach Magnolia around 8:20 p.m. CDT.
The National Weather Service warned that flying debris poses a serious threat to anyone caught without shelter. Mobile homes are at particular risk of damage or destruction, while roofs, windows and vehicles in the storm’s path will likely sustain damage. Significant tree damage is also expected.
“Take cover now,” the National Weather Service urged. “Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows.”
The agency emphasized that tornadoes are extremely difficult to see and confirm at night, particularly when heavy rainfall obscures visibility. Residents were warned not to wait to see or hear a tornado before taking shelter.
Those outdoors, in mobile homes or in vehicles, should move immediately to the closest substantial shelter and protect themselves from flying debris, officials said.
