Amazon last-mile delivery facility coming to Ottawa, creating 100-plus jobs, spanning 50,800 square feet – Shaw Local News Network

The city of Ottawa on Thursday announced the arrival of a new Amazon last-mile delivery facility, bringing 100 or more jobs, set to be constructed in the Ottawa Industrial Park.
The 50,800-square-foot warehouse will be an addition to Amazon’s regional logistics network, helping streamline package delivery to residents and businesses across the region.
It wasn’t out of the dark, by any means. It has a lot to do with the hard work that our economic development team does in promoting the sites. They were looking for a facility in this area that meets these requirements, [and] we responded and were able to land it.”
This facility that will create about 100 jobs, with the added positions of contracted drivers of the vans, will operate as a “last-mile” hub, where large volumes of parcels will be sorted and dispatched into separate delivery trucks, allowing for efficient and timely delivery to nearby areas. Ottawa Mayor Robb Hasty said there will be less than 15 semitrailer deliveries between 6 and 8 a.m. Anywhere from 100 to 150 vans will leave the site at 10 a.m., and the facility should be empty by noon. Those vans are expected to return at about 6 to 8 p.m.
The construction of the warehouse recently began, marking a milestone in Ottawa’s ongoing efforts to foster economic growth and enhance infrastructure, the mayor said in a Thursday news release.
“We are thrilled to welcome Amazon to Ottawa,” Hasty said. “This new facility will not only create jobs but also place Ottawa at the heart of a cutting-edge logistics network, benefiting both our community and the broader region.
“I’m glad that they chose Ottawa, and we’re looking forward to this being a good stepping stone for other development in our industrial park.”
The Ottawa City Council in August approved the sale of a piece of property at U.S. Route 6/Route 71 and Technology Drive but did not provide any details at the time of the sale. Hasty said at that time that the agreement with Ryan Companies U.S. Inc. contained a nondisclosure clause, and that the city would “hopefully very soon” be able to disclose the nature of the transaction.
Hasty said the city advertised openings in the industrial park on several websites. That caught Amazon’s attention, so the merchandising giant approached Ottawa.
“It wasn’t out of the dark, by any means,” Hasty said. “It has a lot to do with the hard work that our economic development team does in promoting the sites. They were looking for a facility in this area that meets these requirements, [and] we responded and were able to land it.”
Hasty said there were “no incentives that were offered” in the acquisition. As the property is located in both a tax increment financing district and an enterprise zone, there were incentives available. However, Hasty said the city “did not enter into any kind of a TIF agreement with Amazon, nor did they apply for any enterprise zone credits.”
The new facility represents a strategic investment in Ottawa’s industrial sector and is expected to generate a range of employment opportunities, from warehouse operations to delivery services, the city said.
“Since this is a last-mile delivery hub, most of its traffic is lightweight vehicles – delivery vans and so forth – so there will not be an insane amount of heavy trucks coming and going. It will be mostly delivery vehicles.”
Ottawa officials said they are committed to supporting Amazon through every phase of development, ensuring a seamless construction process and integration into the local economy.
“This last-mile facility will allow us to better serve customers in Ottawa and the surrounding region,” said Kyle DeGiulio, senior manager of economic development for Amazon. “We’re grateful for our partnership with the city of Ottawa and look forward to sharing more details about this facility and the good jobs we’ll offer in the future.”
The Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce issued a statement of congratulations Thursday.
“Congratulations to the city of Ottawa on this exciting announcement,” Ottawa Area Chamber Executive Director Jay McCracken said. “Our Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce looks forward to working closely with the city of Ottawa and Amazon as we continue to support business growth and development in our Ottawa area.”

Ottawa hardware store to convert to Ace Hardware – Shaw Local News Network

Home Hardware in Ottawa is converting to an Ace Hardware store. (Stephanie Jaquins for Shaw Local)
Home Hardware shoppers have undoubtedly noticed new signage and remodeling at the Ottawa store.
“We’re becoming a full blown Ace Hardware store,” said Jay O’Hara, Ace Hardware general manager who oversees the chain and is assisting with the Ottawa store. “All new products, all new fixtures, all new lighting, everything.”
O’Hara said the store will have more extensive departments.
“We’re growing all those categories. Whatever plumbing was before, it’ll probably be double that, same thing with electrical, with paint,” he said. “Painting will be automatic. We have an automatic tinter. None of this doing it by hand, it’s all automated. It’s awesome.”
He anticipates the remodel to be concluded by Thursday, Jan. 16.
Staffing will be the same minus one familiar face. Owner Ruth Snelting, who has been with the store since its inception, retired and the new owners are Chris, Maria and Trevor Amir. The Amirs own several Ace stores, including locations in Seneca, Sandwich, Princeton, Rochelle, Mahomet and Gibson City. The store at 814 Clinton St. opened in 2000 as part of Do it Best Corp.

Grocery tax to remain in place in Princeton – Shaw Local News Network

Princeton will keep its 1% sales tax on groceries after the state passed legislation that would eliminate the tax in 2026. (Derek Barichello)
Princeton will keep its 1% sales tax on groceries after the state passed legislation that would eliminate the tax in 2026.
The Princeton City Council passed Jan. 6 a final reading of the ordinance. City Manager Theresa Wittenauer said in December while it is challenging to figure out how much Princeton would stand to lose in funds if it were to allow the 1% sales tax on groceries to be repealed, the Illinois Municipal League completed a comparative study with similar sized communities and figured the loss for cities such as Princeton would be about $350,000 to $400,000 annually.
Officials have said collecting revenue from sales tax allows the city to benefit from people who live outside of Princeton, not just property owners.

Morris woman wins $3 million in Illinois Lottery – Morris Herald-News

A Morris resident is the owner of a winning $3 million Illinois Lottery ticket.
The scratch-off ticket was bought at a Circle K gas station and convenience store, located at 26950 W. Eames in Channahon, according to a news release from the Illinois Lottery.
The lucky winner won the top prize on a $30, $3,000,000 Super Bonus scratch-off ticket, which launched in July.
“I still can’t believe this actually happened to me,” the winner, who has requested to remain anonymous, said in the release. “Scratch-off lottery games are my favorite, and my local gas station had a brand-new game on display, so I bought three tickets. After I scratched the third ticket, I was pretty sure I had won the top prize, but I wasn’t 100% positive.”
The winner said it was the longest weekend of her life not being able to confirm if she was holding a winning ticket worth $3 million.
“I wanted to verify the ticket, but the lottery prize center was closed for the weekend,” she said. “Then I remembered that I could scan the ticket at the store, and when I did, my mouth dropped, and I went numb.”
When asked what she plans to do with the life-changing amount of money, the winner told the Illinois Lottery, “invest, remodel the house and travel – exactly in that order.”
For selling the winning ticket, the Circle K retailer will receive a bonus of $30,000, which is 1% of the prize amount, according to the Illinois Lottery.

Princeton Christian Academy high school and junior high school students will present Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize winning play “Our Town” at 6:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2-3, in the Academy auditorium, 21890 Walter Payton Memorial Highway.
The prescribed lack of set and props force the audience and actors to focus on people and relationships, which is exactly what the play is about. The play takes place in Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire in the early 1900s, but it represents life from all time and places, showing how humanity is tied together, sharing common goals and dreams and practices. As the audience watches the play, they see themselves and appreciate life a little bit more.
The public is invited to this event at Princeton Bible Church, located two miles northeast of Princeton on U.S. 34. Admission is free.
Leading the cast are Brooke Clausen as stage manager, Natalie Richey as Emily Webb, and David Lunger as George Gibbs. They are supported by Ava Clausen and Arthur van den Berg as Myrtle and Editor Webb, Beth Freeman and JT Bullington as Julia and Doc Gibbs, Josiah Gale as Simon Stimpson, Abi Freeman as Mrs. Soames, Jake Harris as Howie Newsome, Sheperd Bayer as Joe Crowell, Joel Odell as Wally Webb, Abby Harris and Amelia Baker as Rebecca Gibbs, Steven Sharkey as Constable Warren, Elyse Anderson as Samantha Craig, and Alice Scruggs and Kaylyn Friel as choir members. The play is directed by Marty Kiser, assisted by Sarah Freeman and Brylee Campbell.
