WITT — State Police report that a driver and his passenger died, and a Clinton man was injured, when the vehicle they were riding in was involved in an accident and overturned Saturday night near the Montgomery County town of Witt.
Police listed the fatalities as driver John E. Thompson, 51, and passenger James E. Thompson, 21, both from Witt. Police said they had been thrown clear of their pickup truck in the 11:16 p.m. crash and later pronounced dead at an area hospital.
A rear seat passenger, named as Dakota L. Cook, 24, from Clinton, was being treated in hospital for injuries.
Police said their preliminary investigation shows the truck was traveling southbound on Illinois 16 near North 19th Avenue when, for “unknown reasons,” it drove off the road to the right. It then overcorrected and swerved back onto the roadway before overcorrecting again and plunging into the right ditch and overturning.
The road was shut down for four hours while police worked the crash scene and the police said Sunday their investigations were continuing.
The Moline native and former Illinois State runner will be competing in her second Olympics in a new event. After finishing 14th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 2016, she will run in the 1,500 this year.
The Red Stars goalkeeper has been on two World Cup-winning teams — as the backup to Hope Solo in 2015 and as the No. 1 goalkeeper in the U.S. team’s run to the 2019 championship. The 33-year-old Connecticut native has played with the Red Stars for six years.
The former Northwestern softball player and current director of operations for Wildcats softball and field hockey will be an infielder for the Italian softball team. Filler formerly played professionally in Italy and for the Chicago Bandits.
The Naperville Central grad originally was named an alternate but joined the full squad after roster rules changed, allowing teams to select 18 players each game from a pool of 22. Krueger, née Short, who played at Florida State, has been a defender with the Red Stars since 2016.
The Marion native finished second at the Olympic trials with a jump of 7 feet, 7¾ inches, which tied his personal best. The 23-year-old Tennessee graduate, who finished fourth in the high jump at the NCAA Championships in June, will make his first Olympic appearance.
Kendziera, a Mount Prospect native, was a 10-time All-American at Illinois. The 26-year-old ran a personal-best time of 48.38 seconds to earn a spot on his first Olympic team.
The former White Sox closer spent 12 seasons in the majors, including 2½ in Chicago from 2015-17. After signing a two-year, $23 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies before the 2019 season, Robertson pitched in only seven games before injuring his elbow and undergoing Tommy John surgery later that year. He hasn’t pitched in the majors since.
The Carbondale native set two American records at the Olympic trials, becoming the second woman to ever top 80 meters with her throw of 80.31 meters (263 feet, 6 inches). Poland’s Anita Włodarczyk holds the world record of 82.98 meters. Price, a two-time NCAA champion at Southern Illinois, finished eighth in 2016 in Rio.
The former Chicago White Sox minor leaguer could become just the third American to medal at the Winter and Summer Olympics if the U.S. team makes the podium. In 2014, Alvarez was part of the 5,000-meter short track speed skating relay team that won silver. The infielder spent five seasons in the Sox farm system and now is in Triple A with the Miami Marlins after playing in 12 major-league games for the team in 2020.
The former major-league pitcher of 17 seasons made 30 starts in 2010-11 for the White Sox and 58 starts and 82 appearances for the Cubs from 2013-15. He last pitched in a major-league game for the Detroit Tigers in 2019.
The Chicago native, who has a brother and sister who also fence, was the 2013 NCAA saber champion at Princeton. She since has competed on the world stage and won bronze at the 2018 senior world championships. This is her first Olympics.
The Orland Park native and Sandburg graduate was the 2021 U.S. ball champion and the all-around, clubs and ribbon silver medalist. She trains at North Shore Rhythmic Gymnastics Center and will be making her Olympic debut.
The Lake Villa native and former Grayslake North student began BMX racing when she was 4 and won her first world title at age 9. She competed for Marian University in Indianapolis and was the 2019 USA Cycling Elite National Champion.
The former Southern Illinois thrower will be making her second Olympic appearance. She failed to qualify for the hammer finals in Rio in 2016, with her throw of 229 feet, 4 inches placing her 14th.
The former Niles West and Notre Dame guard will make her first Olympic appearance in the middle of the best season of her career. Loyd, a two-time WNBA All-Star whom the Seattle Storm drafted No. 1 overall in 2015, is averaging 17.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game.
The 2017 Northwestern graduate placed fifth in the 10-kilometer open-water swim in Rio and now has a chance to win his first medal in Tokyo. Wilimovsky, who also was fourth in the 1,500-meter freestyle in Rio, qualified in July 2019 for the Tokyo Games in the 10K marathon event, which debuted at the Olympics in 2008.
The former Illini setter was an All-American in her 2018 senior season. At 23 entering her first Olympics, she is the youngest member of the U.S. volleyball team.
The Chicago Cubs rehab pitching coordinator and pitching analyst has a history playing for Israel, including pitching in the 2017 World Baseball Classic. Zeid, a 34-year-old Connecticut native, made 48 relief appearances over two seasons with the Houston Astros in 2013 and 2014.
The two-time World Cup winner now will add a second Olympics to her resume. The 29-year-old midfielder/defender has played in only one game this season because of an MCL sprain but still made the U.S. roster with hopes she’ll be ready for Olympic play.
The former Carlinville athlete will be making her second Olympic appearance. Card, who still owns the IHSA discus state-meet record and was the 2016 NCAA champion at Wisconsin, didn’t qualify for finals in the 2016 Games in Rio.
Robinson, the former Wheaton St. Francis and Nebraska standout, was a member of the 2016 U.S. Olympic team that won bronze. She has been on the U.S. women’s national team since 2014
The 40-year-old Latin grad is the top-ranked American in the world at No. 5. He helped the 2016 team win silver in Rio and also finished fifth individually.
The Geneva grad grew up competing in triathlon, but his career was derailed for a couple of years when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2011. He recovered and became a seven-time Triathlon World Cup medalist and the 2017 USA Triathlon elite national champion. This will be his first Olympics.
Zeng was the 2021 U.S. all-around champion and also took gold in hoop, clubs and ribbon. The Libertyville graduate finished 11th in the all-around competition at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, which tied her for the best U.S. finish since Valerie Zimring in 1984. She trains at North Shore Rhythmic Gymnastics Center.
The Macon Meridian and Eastern Illinois grad is making her second Olympic appearance after helping the U.S. team to a fifth-place finish in 2016. She’s also a former track athlete.
The New Trier graduate grew up sailing on Lake Michigan, sailed at Connecticut College and now will make her Olympic debut. Shea and teammate Steph Roble won bronze in the 49erFX World Championship in 2020.
The Collinsville High School and Illinois grad is on her first Olympic team after she was an alternate in 2016. She helped the Illini’s run to NCAA runner-up in 2011. She has been a member of the women’s national team since 2015.
The White Sox drafted the Latin product in the 39th round of the 2012 draft. He played in the Sox organization for one season before playing in Australia and in the American Association of Professional Baseball. He’s also an assistant baseball coach at Chicago State.
Papadakis, a Gurnee native who attended Warren and College of Lake County, is making her Olympic debut at 78 kilograms. The three-time medalist at the Pan American Championships has been coached by her dad, Steve.
Based out of Chicago’s north suburbs, this team is made up of Isabelle Connor (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), Camilla Feeley (Wheeling), Lili Mizuno (Northbrook), Elizaveta Pletneva (Wheeling) and Nicole Sladkov (Vernon Hills). They are the third U.S. rhythmic gymnastics team to compete in Olympic competition. With a different set of athletes, North Shore Rhythmic Gymnastics also competed in Rio in 2016 but finished last in the Olympic qualifying round.
Seymour will be making her second Olympic appearance for the Bahamas after finishing sixth in the 100-meter hurdles in 2016 in Rio. She was a three-time All-American at Illinois before she transferred to Texas for her final season, when she finished fourth in the 100 hurdles at the NCAA championships.
The Illinois alum, who won the 2003 NCAA doubles championship and helped the Illini to the team championship that year, returns to the Olympics after winning silver in the mixed doubles competition with Venus Williams in Rio in 2016. He will pair with Frances Tiafoe in the men’s doubles competition this year.
Saunders won NCAA indoor and outdoor shot put titles in her freshman year at Southern Illinois before transferring to Mississippi, where she won two more national championships. She made her Olympic debut in 2016 in Rio, where she finished fifth.
Murphy was born in Palos Heights but moved to Florida as a kid. He is a three-time Olympic gold medalist, winning the 100- and 200-meter backstroke and the 400 medley relay in 2016 in Rio.
The 2016 silver medalist in Rio was born in Downers Grove before her family moved to South Carolina when she was 4 years old. She won silver with a vault of 15 feet, 11 inches, in 2016 and is the American outdoor record-holder in the event.
Detry, the 2015 Big Ten golfer of the year at Illinois, makes his Olympic debut. He teamed with former Illini teammate Thomas Pieters to win the 2018 World Cup of Golf championship for Belgium.
The former Wheaton Warrenville South player, who helped Loyola to back-to-back NCAA championships in 2014 and 2015, makes his second Olympic appearance. He played for the 2016 team that won bronze in Rio.
The Illinois alum will make his second Olympic appearance after finishing fourth in 2016 in Rio. Pieters was the 2012 NCAA individual champion and helped the Illini finish as the NCAA runner-up in 2013.
The 22-year-old defender is in her third season with the Red Stars and was the youngest player on the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup-winning team. After the California native helped Stanford to the NCAA title in 2017, she became the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NWSL draft.
Federowicz played in 17 games for the Chicago Cubs during the 2016 season. The catcher has made appearances for six teams over eight major-league seasons and now is with the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Triple-A team.
The former DePaul thrower will be making his second Olympic appearance. The Brockville, Ontario, native, who won multiple Big East titles in the shot put and discus at DePaul, didn’t make the finals in his first trip to the Olympics in 2016.
The Chicago Bulls guard was the tournament MVP in the Olympic qualifying tournament after leading the Czech Republic with 16 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game. Satoranský, 29, averaged 7.7 points and 4.7 assists in 58 games this season, his second with the Bulls and fifth in the NBA.
The Downers Grove South graduate is the American record-holder in the indoor and outdoor triple jump. She qualified for her first Olympics by placing second at the trials with a jump of 47 feet, 1½ inches.
Bull, who was an All-American on the horizontal bar at Illinois, qualified for the Olympics in 2019 at the World Championships when he earned a score of 14.366 on the horizontal bar and finished seventh in the event final. He will be the first Illini gymnast to compete in the Olympics since Justin Spring in 2008.
Just a few months after he was named to his first NBA All-Star team, the 6-foot-5 Bulls guard was picked for his first Olympic team. LaVine, 26, averaged 27.4 points, five rebounds and 4.9 assists per game last season, his fourth with the Bulls and seventh in the NBA.
Ziemek finished seventh in the 2016 Olympics in Rio and was the 2018 U.S. national champion. The Lake Park and Wisconsin graduate had a personal best of 8,471 points in the decathlon at the Olympic trials to finish third.
The Glenbrook South graduate won gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics in the 400-meter medley relay. After finishing third in the 100 freestyle at the Olympic trials, she will be a part of the 400 freestyle relay in Tokyo.

Two men sustained injuries Thursday evening in a shooting in the Roseland neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side, police said.
The shooting was reported at 5:18 p.m. in the 8700 block of South Princeton, the Chicago Police Department confirmed.
The two men were traveling in a vehicle in the 200 block of East 87th Street when they were shot by unknown offenders inside another vehicle, authorities stated. Both men sustained gunshot wounds, and their vehicle crashed in the 8700 block of South Princeton.
One victim was shot in the hand, and the second was shot in the abdomen, according to fire officials. They were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in unknown conditions, fire officials said.

The incident remains under investigation by Area Two detectives.

–  Ivan Cole, 74, of Independence, IA died on Wednesday June 30, 2021, at his home in Independence. 
Ivan was born on October 14, 1946, in Independence, IA the son of Oliver and Ruth (Bantz) Cole. He was a 1965 graduate of the Independence High School and shortly after joined the US Navy. Ivan attended the University of Northern Iowa to study Engineering. He went on to work at John Deer in waterloo, IA and at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids before joining the team at Triangle Plastic in Independence. Ivan was proud of the work he and everyone did at Triangle Plastics put in. He retired in 1996. On June 16, 1973, he married Kay Reed in Princeton, IL. Together they made their home between Independence and Masonville, IA. 
He was a member of the Buffalo Creek Golf Course, Pat’s Tap pool League and competed for many years. Ivan was an avid reader. He would often look up subjects to help his friends and family to give them advice. 
Ivan is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Kay Cole, Independence, IA his stepdaughters; Jackie (Duane) Franck, Independence, IA, and Kristi (Chip) Cooksley, Winthrop, IA. five grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren; a brother, Delmar (Marcia) Cole, Grundy Center, IA. 
He is preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Ruth Cole, and a brother Kenny Cole. 
A Visitation will be held from 4 PM until 7 PM on Friday July 2, 2021, at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence. A Funeral Service will be held at 1 PM on Saturday July 3, 2021, at the funeral home.

Seven people died, including a 12-year-old boy, and 55 others were injured in shootings over the weekend across Chicago, police stated.
At approximately 5:28 p.m. Friday, a man of unknown age was shot and killed in the 7200 block of South Yale. The man was near the sidewalk when he heard shots and felt pain, according to authorities.
The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the armpit area and hand. He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center and subsequently pronounced dead.
Early Saturday morning at approximately 1:25 a.m. in the 8700 block of South Lafayette, a 34-year-old woman was sitting in the driver’s seat of a vehicle in a parking lot with a group of people when shots were fired, police said.

The woman was shot in the head taken to University of Chicago Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
No one was in custody as of Saturday afternoon. Area Two detectives are investigating.
A 12-year-old boy was found fatally shot in the head in the 8000 block of South Bennette at approximately 10:30 a.m., according to police.
Police placed a 36-year-old woman into custody and said the incident appears to be “domestic-related.” Area Two detectives are investigating.
At approximately 4:55 p.m. Saturday, one man was fatally shot and three others were injured in a shooting in the 900 block of East 79th Street. The man who died was 24 years old and sustained a gunshot wound to the head, according to police. He was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
A second victim, a 26-year-old man, was shot in the ankle and listed in good condition at the hospital. A 28-year-old man was shot in the leg and transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was said to be in good condition, authorities stated. A fourth victim, a 27-year-old man, was shot in the leg and also reported to be in good condition.
At least six people were shot in the 300 block of East Kensington at approximately 9:39 p.m. Saturday night.
According to Chicago police, a group of people were walking to their cars when a person inside of a vehicle fired multiple rounds, striking six different people.
A 42-year-old woman was hit twice in the arm and once in the armpit, and she was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Another victim, a 32-year-old man, was shot in the face, and was listed in critical condition at an area hospital.
Four other victims, including a 15-year-old girl, a 38-year-old man, a 22-year-old man and a 31-year-old man, also suffered injuries in the incident, and were all listed in fair condition at area hospitals.
No suspects are currently in custody, and police are continuing to investigate.
Early Sunday morning, a 42-year-old woman was standing outside in the 2700 block of West Flournoy when she heard gunshots and was hit in the left knee. She was taken to an area hospital, where her condition stabilized.
Police responding to the shooting discovered a 54-year-old man sitting in a vehicle nearby. He had been shot multiple times, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
No suspects are in custody, and police are continuing to investigate.
Early Monday morning, Illinois State Police officers responding to a report of a shooting on the Bishop Ford said one person “sustained life-threatening injuries” and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the shooting is believed to have taken place around 1:45 a.m.
The ramp from Interstate 94 southbound to 130th Street was closed for several hours as officers investigated, but no further details were provided.
Preliminary information indicates the following occurred: ISP District Chicago responded to a reported expressway shooting at the above location and time. One person sustained life-threatening injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.  At approximately 2:53 a.m., the ramp from of Interstate 94 southbound to 130^th Street eastbound was closed for the investigation; all lanes were reopened at approximately 6:15 a.m. There is no further information available at this time. When more information becomes available, we will be sure to circle back to you.

UPDATE: The road has reopened.
EARLIER UPDATE: A single-car crash on U.S. 67 took out a power pole, preventing vehicle and train traffic from operating.
One person suffered minor injuries.
The car was headed towards Clinton in the 24000 block of Great River Road.
The road was closed and traffic was rerouted due to downed power lines and any trains on their way also would be stopped.
MidAmerican Energy is on the scene to repair the line and pole. The LeClaire and Princeton fire departments, Scott County deputies and the LeClaire Police Department are there as well.

An investigation found that about 11:30 p.m., the man, of Mt. Prospect, was driving a silver 2000 Toyota Avalon north on I-55 just south of Princeton Avenue, when he veered off the road to the right and lost control.
A 56-year-old man died in a vehicle crash Saturday night on Interstate 55 near Bridgeport on the South Side, according to preliminary information from Illinois State police.
An investigation found that about 11:30 p.m., the man, of Mt. Prospect, was driving a silver 2000 Toyota Avalon north on I-55 just south of Princeton Avenue, when he veered off the road to the right and lost control, state police said.
The Avalon struck some trees along the grassy median before rolling along an embankment and landing on the slip ramp from Interstate 94 southbound towards I-55 northbound, state police said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said. He was identified as Victor Deavila by the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy ruled his death an accident.
A passenger of the Avalon, a 16-year-old girl from Oak Lawn, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
About 11:50 p.m., the ramp from I-94 southbound towards I-55 northbound was closed for an investigation, but reopened by 2 a.m., state police said.

Chicago police say at least 101 people have been shot, 16 fatally, in shootings across the city over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
The first fatal shooting of the weekend occurred at approximately 5:22 p.m. in Hermosa on the city’s Northwest Side. Police say a 22-year-old man was on a sidewalk in the 2700 block of N. Kilbourn when some in a light-colored vehicle came up, exited and began firing shots.
The 22-year-old was shot in the head and body and transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead.
Less than an hour later, a 20-year-old man was fatally shot in the North Lawndale neighborhood, police said. At approximately 6:30 p.m., the victim and another 20-year-old man were sitting in a vehicle in the 3900 block of West 16th Street, waiting for a light to change, when an unknown offender approached and fired shots.

The first victim was shot two times in the torso and three times in the back, according to authorities. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and subsequently pronounced dead. The other victim, a passenger in the vehicle, was shot once in the leg and listed in stable condition at Stroger Hospital.
In Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood, a 40-year-old man was playing music in his apartment in the 7400 block of South Emerald when a neighbor made “several complaints” about the noise, police said.
The man answered his front door at approximately 11:22 p.m. and was engaged in a verbal altercation when an unknown person produced a handgun and shot the man in the torso. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Early Saturday morning at approximately 1:23 a.m., officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 2200 block of North Lockwood and found a 19-year-old man lying on the sidewalk unresponsive with gunshot wounds to the back and abdomen. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and pronounced dead.
At approximately 4:42 a.m. Saturday, a 39-year-old man was traveling in the rear seat of a vehicle in the 4400 block of West Cermak when the back window shattered, according to police. The man was shot in the back of the head and pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital. No one has been placed in custody.
In the 10-100 block of North Menard at approximately 10:46 p.m. Saturday, two men and a woman were standing outside in the alley when a 33-year-old man began shooting at the three, police said.
A 32-year-old man was shot multiple times in the body and is listed in stable condition at Stroger Hospital. The 45-year-old woman was shot once in the head and was pronounced dead. A second man, 49, sustained one gunshot wound to the buttocks and was transported to Stroger Hospital in stable condition. A 49-year-old man who is a concealed carry holder saw the incident and fired shots at the shooter, who was hit once in the arm and once in the hip.
The man was placed in custody and transported to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, according to police.
In the 6100 block of South Wabash at approximately 1:05 a.m. Monday morning, an unknown person in a vehicle fired numerous shots at six people, according to officials.
A 21-year-old man was shot twice in the head and a 26-year-old man was shot in the torso. Both were pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
A 29-year-old woman was shot in the elbow and listed in good condition at the University of Chicago Medical Center. A girl, 12, suffered a gunshot wound to the buttocks and was listed in critical condition at Comer Children’s Hospital. A 13-year-old boy was also taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the left hand.
A 34-year-old woman suffered two graze wounds to the body, but was listed in good condition and released on the scene, police said.
There is no one in custody and Area One detectives are investigating.
Just over an hour later at 2:08 a.m, two men were outside in the 1800 block of South Kildare when they were hit by gunshots from an unknown person. A man, approximately 30-years-old was hit multiple times in the body and was pronounced dead at Mt. Sinai Hospital.
The second man, 62, sustained one gunshot wound to the knee and was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in stable condition. There was no one in custody as of Monday afternoon and Area Four detectives are investigating.
At approximately 9:14 a.m. Monday morning, a 34-year-old man was found unresponsive inside a vehicle in the 3400 block of West 26th Street, police stated. The victim was driving when unknown offenders fired gunshots, causing him to become unresponsive and crash into a parked vehicle, according to police. The victim was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
On Monday evening, at approximately 5:19 p.m. in the 8600 block of South Aberdeen, a 48-year-old man was fatally shot during an argument with an unknown offender. The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the face and was pronounced dead at the scene.
At around 10 p.m. Monday, a 26-year-old man was standing outside next to a car in the 200 block of East 59th Street when someone in a passing car shot him in the chest, according to police. Officials said he got into the passenger seat of a friend’s car who then began to drive him before stopping in the 5700 block of South Calumet, where emergency personnel responded to the scene and took him to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Chicago Police are looking for two carjackers who tased three rideshare drivers and another driver within hours of each other across on the city Monday night.
At least three of the victims declined to go to hospitals, police said. No one was in custody.
The first attack happened around 8 p.m. in the 9700 block of South Princeton Avenue in Longwood Manor, police said. Police have not released further information on that incident.
The second happened around 9:30 p.m. in the 2600 block of North Mozart Street in Logan Square. Police said a 24-year-old woman was approached by two people who demanded her vehicle. One of them tased her arm, but the duo ran away after the woman screamed, police said.

A half hour later, another driver was carjacked in Logan Square. The driver had picked up two passengers and one of them pulled out a Taser and used it on the driver several times around 10 p.m. in the 2900 Block of North Sawyer Avenue.
The driver, 55, stopped and got out, and the carjackers sped south on Sawyer in the driver’s black Toyota Highlander.
The last attack happened around 11:15 p.m. in the 3500 block of West Ohio Street in East Garfield Park, police said. Again, the driver was carrying two passengers when one of them used a Taser on the driver, hitting him in the back of the neck.
The driver got out and the carjackers drove west on Ohio in the driver’s gray Toyota Camry, police said.
In a community alert, police described the carjackers only as in their late teens or early 20s.

OSF HealthCare Saint Clare Medical Center is now part of the OSF HealthCare Ministry. The former Perry Memorial Hospital became the 15th hospital in the Peoria-based integrated health system on July 1.
A 25-bed critical access facility, OSF Saint Clare is one of Bureau County’s largest employers.

“While the signs may change, the care that’s going to be provided is still from those same people that have been serving the community for years and they’re still taking care of their friends, family, and neighbors and that’s not going to change. That caring and compassion is going to be here but now supported by the OSF Mission and values across the Ministry that’s able to support us and help serve the community,” said Jackie Kernan, president of OSF Saint Clare Medical Center.
The Most Reverend Louis Tylka, Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Peoria, conducted the Blessing and Dedication ceremony which marked the culmination of years of discussions and months of work to integrate the former Perry Memorial staff and facilities into OSF HealthCare. Additionally, OSF is pleased to welcome nearly 300 new Mission Partners (employees) to the OSF family.
Beginning this fall, OSF Saint Clare will offer new services to the community including OSF OnCall, and OSF MyChart with the integration of Epic, OSF’s electronic medical record system. This will expand the focus on digital health access and opportunities.
“Innovation is one of our core competencies and goals for our Ministry,” said Roxanna Crosser, Western Region CEO for OSF HealthCare. “So as we look at some of the teleservices that we have within our Ministry and some of the things that we do with predictive analytics, those are important items for the Princeton community, and I see that they really embrace that change. They are very traditional and very culture-driven in the area of quality and safety and how they serve their patients, but they also look toward the future of rural health care.”
Discussions to explore the partnership that ultimately led to the transfer of ownership began in August of 2019 with representatives of Perry Memorial Hospital, the City of Princeton, which owned the hospital, and OSF HealthCare. The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board approved the change of ownership exemption application in January of 2021.
With the addition of OSF Saint Clare, OSF HealthCare employs nearly 24,000 Mission Partners at more than 150 locations – including 15 hospitals throughout Illinois and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

PRINCETON — An Olney, Illinois man died at the scene of a Tuesday afternoon accident on U.S. 41 at County Road 100 West.
An accident report released by the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office Thursday morning says Bert A. Marvel, 79, Olney, a passenger in a 2004 Ford F150 pickup, died from injuries when he was trapped in the vehicle.
The report says Jennifer L. Smashey, 54, Olney, was driving the pickup northbound on U.S. 41 behind a 2002 Sterling commercial truck operated by Steven W. Couts, 60, Oakland City.
Couts accelerated at a low rate of speed in the right lane of the highway from the traffic signal at CR100 West, and Smashey was traveling at a higher rate of speed in that lane, according to the report, when she hit the back of the commercial truck with the front right side of the pickup.
Police said Smashey told authorities that she misjudged the speed of the other vehicle. Witnesses said Couts was traveling slowly taking off from the signal.
Indiana State Police were called to the scene to conduct a reconstruction of the accident scene.
Both drivers were taken from the scene to Deaconess Hospital.
According to the report, Smashey was charged with a felony count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, causing death.
The sheriff’s office reported a man was injured in a separate one-car accident early Wednesday morning on Maple Tree Drive near Tulip Tree Drive at the Toyota plant.
In that 1:10 a.m. accident, Tony D. Shuffitt, Jr., 32, of Hope, was eastbound in a 2015 Ford Fusion and swerved to avoid an animal in the road. He overcorrected, and the vehicle went off the road and hit a sign, continuing down a steep embankment into a ditch before coming to rest.
According to the accident report, Shuffitt may have had a broken nose, but refused an ambulance.
