Since the 1980s, what the country thinks of as suburbia looks a lot like the well-off northern suburbs of Chicago.
When I was a teenager, attending what I\u2019ll call Inner City Rust Belt High School, an integrated institution across the street from an auto plant in Michigan, I got all my impressions of suburbia from the movies. Risky Business<\/em>. Ordinary People<\/em>. National Lampoon\u2019s Vacation<\/em>. The entire John Hughes oeuvre, especially Sixteen Candles<\/em>, The Breakfast Club<\/em>, and Ferris Bueller\u2019s Day Off<\/em>. 
It was an exotic world. Or perhaps its lack of exoticism made it seem so to me. Unlike at my high school, there were no Black people, and lots of rich people, so social distinctions were based on class, rather than race. Every John Hughes movie featured a kid from the wrong side of the Metra tracks vs. a sneering snob who probably lived in a Sheridan Road mansion. People drove foreign cars\u2014expensive<\/em> ones, like Cameron\u2019s father\u2019s Ferrari in Ferris Bueller<\/em>. They were obsessed with academic and professional achievement. In Risky Business<\/em>, Tom Cruise spared himself from going to Illinois<\/a> by setting the Princeton recruiter up with a hooker.
\u201cPrinceton can use a guy like Joel,\u201d Tom\u2019s wealthy father tells him at the end of the movie, his voice practically cracking with pride.
Rightly or wrongly, I concluded that suburbia was segregated and snobbish, an attitude I\u2019ve never been able to shake. I didn\u2019t get that attitude from movies about just any suburbs, I got it from movies about Chicago\u2019s Northern suburbs, which, over the last 40 years, have come to be seen as representative of all American suburbia. (My first job in Chicago was covering the Lake County suburbs for the Tribune<\/em>. That didn\u2019t change my mind.)
During the first wave of suburbanization, in the aftermath of World War II, the suburbs of Northeastern cities got all the attention, in movies such as Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House<\/em>, and in the fiction of John Updike, John Cheever and Richard Yates. When Hollywood rediscovered Chicago in the 1980s, though, it also discovered Chicago\u2019s suburbs, through the work of writers and directors who grew up there. Paul Brickman, who directed Risky Business<\/em>, was from Highland Park; Hughes was from Northbrook.
In the 1980s, suburbia was in its prime. Back then, nobody with money wanted to live in urban America. Rich people wouldn\u2019t start moving back to cities for another decade. The suburbs are often mocked as a cultural wasteland, but towards the end of the 20th century, that\u2019s where a lot of Chicago\u2019s cultural energy was coming from. Even The Blues Brothers<\/em>, which is revered as a document of post-industrial, pre-gentrification Chicago, was co-created by John Belushi of Wheaton. Steppenwolf Theatre Company was co-founded by Jeff Perry of Highland Park and Gary Sinise of Blue Island. According to his National Lampoon<\/em> colleague P.J. O\u2019Rourke, Hughes in particular was eager to rescue his native grounds from the notion that \u201cAmerica\u2019s suburbs were a living hell almost beyond the power of John Cheever\u2019s words to describe.\u201d
Chicago\u2019s 1990s alternative music scene may have been born in Wicker Park, but its leading lights were suburbanites: Liz Phair of Winnetka, Billy Corgan of Elk Grove Village, Local H of Zion. Urge Overkill formed at Northwestern University. High Fidelity<\/em>, the movie which celebrated that scene, starred Evanston\u2019s own John Cusack as Rob Gordon, a guy from the suburbs who opens a record shop on Milwaukee Avenue.
Chicago\u2019s suburbs continue to define suburbia in popular culture. The 2004 movie Mean Girls<\/em>, the quintessential depiction of high school cliques, was set at fictional North Shore High School (i.e., New Trier). The characters even shopped at Old Orchard, although it was inaccurately depicted as an indoor mall. Greater Chicagoland also makes an appearance, and provides a contrast: Wayne’s World<\/em>, set in Aurora, and Roseanne<\/em>, set in the fictional, Elgin-inspired collar-county town of Lanford, are on the outside, physically, culturally and economically.
Nathan Hill\u2019s The Nix<\/em><\/a>, one of the finest fiction debuts of recent years, is about a young writer who grows up in Streamwood, then goes on to teach literature \u201cat a small university northwest of Chicago, in a suburb where all the giant freeways split apart and end at giant department stores and corporate office parks and three-lane roads clogged with vehicles driven by the parents who send their children to Samuel\u2019s school.\u201d (That sounds a lot like Harper College in Palatine.) The Nix<\/em> allowed me to vicariously experience the 1980s suburban adolescence I never had, depicted much more realistically than in a John Hughes movie.
This fall, Jonathan Franzen, who was born in Western Springs, is coming out with Crossroads<\/em>, the first volume in his \u201cA Key to All Mythologies\u201d trilogy. Publishers Weekly<\/em> calls it \u201ca sweeping and masterly examination of the shifting culture of early 1970s America.\u201d Where better to examine that culture than \u201cthe small Illinois town of New Prospect\u201d\u2014a suburb of Chicago.
In the early 20th Century, novelists who wanted to capture America in all its complexity set their stories in Chicago: Frank Norris\u2019s The Pit<\/em>, Upton Sinclair\u2019s The Jungle<\/em>, Willa Cather\u2019s The Song of the Lark<\/em>. In the early 21st Century, they\u2019re turning to Chicago\u2019s suburbs.

Could have also weaved in Daryl Hannah and Jennifer Beals who, though they were both born in Chicago and don’t neatly fit into the theme of the article, were iconic 80’s actresses who starred in Wall Street and Flashdance, respectively, representing 80’s-style greed and aspirational notions
John hugh spent his tween and teen years in Northbrook, not Deerfield. Went to high school at GBN. This was a Big Deal when I was there in the early 1980s and those films were first coming out.

How can you not mention The Murray brothers and Caddyshack (based on Indian Hill in Winnetka)?
While they are the quintessential “Seattle Band”, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder is from Evanston.
Uncle Buck, She’s having a baby, John Hughes single handedly put the city and north shore on the entire GLOBE’S RADAR FOREVER.
The 1993 movie \u201cGroundhog Day\u201d – with all the Bill Murray disdain and ennui – was filmed in the northwest suburb of Woodstock rather than the actual Punxsutawney PA. This was likely for the quintessential \u201cAll-American\u201d feel of the Woodstock town square. This, and because the director Harold Ramos was from Chicago.
Harper College is not a university by any means, though it is an excellent community college. M

I’ve thought about this myself quite a bit – that I took for granted the idea that so much in the way of film \/ pop culture as I was growing up was set in a specific part of Chicagoland. I do wonder how writers \/ directors \/ producers to this day think of “setting” and how Chicago and its suburbs still fit into what may be “typical” America in the way that you wouldn’t get if you set a movie in Wisconsin, or New Jersey, or Alabama. The Chicago area is indeed a microcosm of the country as a whole (and IL one of the most demographically-representative), so it does make as much sense today as it did back then, I suppose. Wouldn’t it be nice if the stories of the 21st century focused more on the specific suburbs \/ neighborhoods within the area that actually do reflect the larger makeup of our country? I’m thinking of some of the progress \/ challenges still present in places like Oak Park, Evanston, or Hyde Park…or the melting pot of some of the northwest suburbs…or post-industrial life in Elgin, Aurora, Joliet, etc.
