Editor “I am in love with the Arboretum, especially the majestic bald cypress. I take many walks there with my husband and little ones in all seasons. Just this last week, my daughter took her first steps in the Idea Garden.”<\/p>\n The state’s highest honor will be bestowed upon eight Land of Lincoln legends, including three with Illini ties: Scott Altman, Carol Ross Barney and John Rogers.<\/p>\n Long before becoming the UI’s Morris Professor of Materials Science & Engineering, then-Ph.D. student Ken Schweizer shared a campus home with a family of raccoons. “Most bizarrely, they learned how to climb a three-story fire escape and enter a hole in the roof, allowing them to run around inside the walls of the house.”<\/p>\n ‘Mutual respect is paramount. Valuing the opinion of one\u2019s coworkers is critical to workplace harmony and productivity.’<\/p>\n ‘One of my happiest professional moments at Illinois was just this spring when I learned that the program I direct, the MS in Library and Information Science, had again been named, by U.S. News & World Report, the No. 1 program in the country.’<\/p>\n The dog-loving, adventure-seeking Michigander talks motorcycles, meetings and the most important rule of the workplace: ‘I have zero tolerance for unethical behavior. Our community holds us to a higher standard, and we should hold ourselves to that higher standard.’<\/p>\n “As a Floridian that just so happened to interview here in the month of February, I was enchanted by the snow. So, my host took my wife and I on a brief nighttime walk through the Quad during a light snow. The scene was quite remarkable for this Florida boy.”<\/p>\n “You never know who or what is going to walk in the emergency room door here. It could be a millionaire or a homeless person. It could be a chicken or a chihuahua. But there is comfort in the chaos because it feels like home.”<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s been a huge honor to be a part of this faculty \u2014 Illinois gave me my career,” the retiring Cele Otnes says. “I\u2019ll spend much of my retirement trying to give back to an institution that gave me so much.\u201d<\/p>\n “I will just be happy to be back on campus. It will be bittersweet because so many of my students graduated over the last 16 months. Under normal circumstances, I would have had the chance to read their names and celebrate their achievements as they participated in graduation ceremonies.”<\/p>\n “Whenever I\u2019m worried about insect decline and the ‘beepocalypse,’ a visit to the Pollinatarium prairie \u2014 camera in hand \u2014 reminds me that there are tiny but safe refuges for our native plants and for the spectacular diversity of insect species that have made their homes in Illinois long before people showed up on the scene.”

Generous alums whose multi-million-dollar namesake buildings will be in the spotlight seven days apart. First up: the Sidney Lu Mechanical Engineering Building<\/strong>, funded by a $21.5 million gift from a 1981 grad, for which a Foundation Weekend ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Oct. 1.
A week later during homecoming, it\u2019s the grand opening of the $48 million Siebel Center for Design<\/strong>, named after three-degree UI grad and $25 million donor Tom Siebel<\/strong>.

Administrative personnel moves rubber-stamped by UI trustees at this morning\u2019s virtual meeting: a two-year extension for Kevin Hamilton<\/strong> as dean of the College of Fine + Applied Arts; the appointment of Venetria Patton<\/strong> as dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences; and the promotion of Mike DeLorenzo<\/strong>, from senior associate chancellor for administration and operations to the newly created vice chancellor for administration and operations.

Years, 11 months and 28 days on the job for Robert Jones<\/strong>, who on Saturday will become the first UI chancellor to celebrate a five-year anniversary in office since Michael Aiken (1993-2001).
Jones ranks seventh in tenure among current Big Ten campus chiefs. No. 1: Morton Schapiro<\/strong>, Northwestern\u2019s president since Sept. 1, 2009. No. 14: the administrator who preceded Jones as UI chancellor on an interim basis: Barb Wilson<\/strong>, Iowa\u2019s president for the past 70 days.

Months back on planet Earth for John Mackovic<\/strong> Illini football captain-turned-NASA astronaut Mike Hopkins<\/strong>, who\u2019ll share stories about his latest, greatest adventure \u2014 a 168-day back-and-forth trip to the International Space Station aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon \u2014 during an Oct. 1 appearance at the Illini Union.
The featured speaker of a program entitled \u201cResilience of an Illini Astronaut\u201d will be joined on his trip back to campus by fellow Class of \u201991 grad \u2014 and wife \u2014 Julie Hopkins<\/strong>.
