This week, communities across northern Illinois will take part in \u201cGood Trouble Lives On,\u201d a national day of peaceful protest marking the fifth anniversary of civil\u2011rights icon Rep. John Lewis\u2019 death. The event aims to continue Lewis\u2019 legacy of nonviolent action to defend democracy, voting rights and civil liberties.
The national action organized by groups including Indivisible, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, National Urban League and others aims to respond to \u201cattacks on our civil and human rights by the Trump administration,\u201d according to the movement\u2019s website. The protests are expected to be peaceful and nonviolent, reflecting Lewis\u2019 approach.
This event follows the No\u202fKings protests held June 14 in many Illinois cities<\/a>.
Almost 2,000 protests across the country happened simultaneously on Flag Day through the \u201cNo Kings\u201d movement, described as a \u201cnationwide day of defiance\u201d against President Donald Trump coinciding with a military parade, on his birthday, that cost an estimated $25 million to $45 million<\/a>. The American Civil Liberties Union estimated<\/a> that more than five million people attended \u201cNo Kings\u201d protests on June 14.
Among the organizing partners for the \u201cGood Trouble Lives On\u201d protest is Indivisible, a national organization formed as a reaction to Trump\u2019s first election in 2016.
