A Princeton man is being charged in a crash on I-80 near Ottawa Friday morning that killed a passenger in his vehicle. 27-year-old Nicholaus J. Cain is charged with aggravated driving under the influence.
Illinois State Police District 17 says Cain was driving westbound on I-80 when for unknown reasons he drove off the road and into the ditch and rolled, trapping him and a passenger. Cain was taken to an area hospital with what police now say were non-life-threatening injuries. An earlier police report said Cain’s injuries were life-threatening.
The passenger was taken to a local hospital and was pronounced dead. The LaSalle County Coroner’s Office identified her as 40-year-old Erica N. Maloy, of Wyanet.
The crash shut down westbound I-80 for about four hours.
Correction: An earlier version of this story said the name of the woman who died in the crash is Nicole N. Maloy. The name was provided by the LaSalle County Coroner in a press release from February 25. WSPY news confirmed with the coroner’s office Monday morning that the correct name is Erica N. Maloy. We regret the error.
