PEORIA COUNTY, Ill. (WMBD) — (UPDATE 8:00 P.M.) Two children are dead after a two-vehicle crash in Peoria Sunday afternoon.
Peoria County Sheriff Brian Asbell said a 14-year-old and a one-year-old both suffered fatal injuries in the crash. It happened at about 2 p.m. on Charter Oak Road.
The teenager has been identified as Owens Bomolo and the child Diego Bonkengo Bolodjawn. Both suffered blunt force trauma and were killed instantly, according to Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood.
He says a car with eight people in it was heading west on Charter Oak Road when it crossed over the center line, hitting an eastbound SUV with one occupant.
The Sheriff said the driver of the car that crossed over the lane was 31-year-old Laetitia Bolodjwa who was the mother of all of the passengers, aged one to 16, in her car. Sheriff Asbell says the 14-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene and the one-year-old died at the hospital. Authorities say the others were all transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the other car was brought to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Sheriff Asbell said Bolodjwa was issued numerous tickets including driving in the wrong lane and failure to secure a child in an approved child restraint system. He said the case is being forwarded to the Peoria County States Attorney’s Office.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family cover funeral and burial expenses.
(PREVIOUS) –– Peoria County Sheriff Brian Asbell said two people died in a car crash Sunday afternoon.
Sheriff Asbell said it happened around 2 p.m. on Charter Oak Road near Charter Oak Lane.
He said several cars were involved in the crash and a large number of people are injured. He did not say how many cars or people were involved.
It closed a portion of the road for several hours, with crews reopening it around 5:15 p.m.
Sheriff Asbell said the investigation is ongoing.

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — During a special Tuesday night meeting, the Peoria City Council gathered around the horseshoe and officially started talks on the city’s 2022-2023 biennial budget.
Patrick Urich, city manager, and Kyle Cratty, finance director, gave the council a presentation on the proposed spending plan, which recommended spending $255.1 million in 2022 and $238.4 million in 2023.

The Peoria Police Department started the initiative in late September and aims at creating stronger a connection between authorities and the community. Twice a week officers go door to door and give out resource information, like community center locations, how to access housing services, and how to help fight crime.
